Bankirai, bankirae or bangkirai oil?
Bangkirai, bankirai, or bankirae oil: there are various ways people spell the product. However, they are all looking for the same thing: an oil to finish bankirai wood. Bankirai is a hard wood species that is often used outdoors. Because it is a hard wood, it is very suitable for outdoor use and lasts a long time. Although bankirai naturally has a long lifespan, it is wise to protect it. Due to sun, weather, and wind, the wood can discolor fairly quickly to a pencil-gray tint. Hard wood species also contain many nutrients that pests and fungi find very appealing. By treating the wood with Bankirai Oil, you can protect it against moisture, dirt, and wood rot.
Bankirai Oil from Osmo
If you want to protect bankirai wood, you are looking for a Bankirai Oil. Osmo's Bankirai Oil, perhaps better known as Terrace Oil in the color Bankirai, is ideally suited for protecting bankirai wood. Because this product consists of a combination of hardwax and oil, the wood acquires a natural look while simultaneously being optimally protected. The oil penetrates the wood and gives it a beautiful natural appearance. The hardwax hardens within the top fibers of the wood, creating a moisture- and dirt-repellent surface that provides protection for years.
Supplies for oiling Bankirai
Bankirai Oil color
The best way to protect bankirai wood against graying is pigment. Therefore, we recommend applying a finish that contains pigment. Osmo Bankirai Oil is available in two color variants: 006 Bankirai Light and 016 Bankirai Dark. The best way to determine which color matches your planks is by using a sample. Would you prefer to apply a colorless finish? Then you could choose the colorless variant of the Terrace Oil. Please note, however: a colorless oil does not protect against graying. A colorless finished surface generally requires maintenance sooner.
De-graying Bankirai wood
Is protection for your bankirai wood too late and has it turned (significantly) grey? Then we recommend first de-greying the wood with Osmo Power-Gel Wood De-greaser. This powerful cleaner removes all deeply ingrained dirt from the wood without damaging or drying it out. After de-greying, the beautiful color of the bankirai wood will return. To prevent the wood from turning grey again in the future, you can protect it with Osmo Bankirai Oil.
Apply Bankirai Oil
Have you been able to make a choice? Then it is simply a matter of applying the Bankirai Oil. We are happy to help you on your way with a step-by-step plan:
- Stir the product thoroughly for 2 minutes. This ensures that the ingredients and pigments in the product are well mixed. Please note: always perform a test on the wood first. This allows you to test whether the appearance and adhesion meet your expectations.
- Apply a thin layer of Bankirai Oil to the new or sanded wood using a brush or floor brush. Mistakes that occur during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 15 minutes after application. Think of brush strokes or hairs coming loose from a brush.
- Allow the surface to dry for at least 12 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). Drying may take longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Ensure good ventilation at all times. Make sure not to apply the treatment during bad weather and/or rain.
- Apply a second thin layer of the Bankirai Oil. Use the same application method as for the first layer; see point 2.
- Allow the second layer to dry for at least 12 hours as well; see point 3.
