Cleaning greyed Douglas fir

Graying wood is caused by UV radiation from the sun combined with moisture such as rain. Is your Douglas fir grayed? Then use the Osmo Power-Gel Wood De-grayer. As the name suggests, this is truly a super product. The Power-Gel is a greenish gel that you brush onto slightly damp wood. After the treatment, the graying of the Douglas fir is cleaned and the natural color of the Douglas fir comes to the fore again. Want to know more about this? How can I clean greyed Douglas fir?

  1. Remove all coarse dirt such as sand, leaves, and soil. Use a broom or stiff brush for this.
  2. Lightly dampen all the Douglas wood with water. Use a garden hose or spray bottle for this.
  3. Apply the Power-Gel to the slightly damp Douglas wood. Application is easiest with a brush or soft brush.
  4. Allow the Power-Gel to soak in for 20 minutes.
  5. Then carefully scrub the wood with a stiff brush or broom. Use plenty of water while scrubbing.
  6. Allow the Douglas wood to dry for at least 24 hours.
  7. If desired, finish the wood with an Osmo exterior oil of your choice.

Oiling cleaned Douglas fir wood

After de-graying—that is, removing the graying—the Douglas wood can be treated with an Osmo exterior oil of your choice. A cleaned Douglas fence can be treated with the UV Protection Oil for a transparent look, with or without color. An opaque finish can also be chosen; for this, Osmo Country House Paint is the right product. Both products protect the wood against moisture, UV radiation (and thus graying), and algae and fungi.

In the future, the treated Douglas wood can be easily cleaned with the Osmo terras reiniger and/or the Osmo Power-Gel for de-graying. Applying a new coat with Osmo can be done without sanding, as the products will not peel or crack. Want to know more? Read more about Douglas oil here.
