Why choose Douglas stain?
Douglas wood, sourced from the Douglas fir, is naturally a durable type of wood. It is strong and highly suitable for outdoor use. However, to ensure its longevity, proper treatment is essential. Moisture, dirt, and cold can cause the wood to gray, dry out, or even develop mold, which is never desirable. To extend the life of your Douglas wood, we recommend using Osmo Douglas Stain. The Douglas Stain provides the wood with a vibrant appearance and optimal protection that lasts for years.
Stain for Douglas wood
Osmo Douglas Stain is an oil- and wax-based product. The treatment protects the wooden surface while preserving the wood’s natural texture. Unlike a lacquer that forms a layer on top of the wood, Osmo Douglas Stain penetrates the wood, so the texture remains visible and tactile even after treatment.
Douglas Stain allows for different finishes. For a light coverage, the product can be polished, highlighting the wood grain and giving the wood a subtle tint. Brushing or rolling the stain onto the wood creates a more opaque finish. This gives you full flexibility—you can achieve exactly the look you want!
Transparent Douglas Stain
Douglas wood naturally has a distinctive reddish-brown color, which is understandable if you want to preserve it. However, it is not recommended to leave Douglas wood untreated, as it grays very quickly. To prevent graying while maintaining the wood’s natural color, you can choose a transparent Douglas Stain. This product will deepen the wood’s color, enhancing its natural beauty.
If you prefer the gray look, let the wood weather outdoors for a few weeks first, then apply a colorless treatment. This way, you can enjoy the gray appearance while still keeping the wood optimally protected.
Staining Douglas wood
Have you decided on a color? Then you can order the necessary products and start staining your Douglas wood. If you are unsure or want to test the appearance, you can also order samples. This allows you to test both the look and adhesion of the product beforehand. Once the test is successful, it’s time to start the real work! Here’s a step-by-step guide for staining your Douglas wood.
First, it is important to prepare the wood for treatment. Remove any existing coating and make sure the wood is completely dry and clean. This creates the best possible base for staining. The easiest way to remove the current layer is by sanding. We recommend using grit progression 40-80-120 for an even surface. If the wood has grayed, you can use Osmo Powergel to restore its color.
After sanding, ensure the surface is completely free of dust, for example by wiping it down. Be careful not to use too much water, as the surface must be fully dry before starting the treatment.
Stir the can thoroughly after opening to mix the product components evenly. You can use the stirring stick included with your order.
Apply a thin layer of the product using a brush, roller, or pad. First, apply the colored layer, then use colorless Douglas Stain as the topcoat. Allow the first layer to dry for 8–12 hours before applying the second layer.
Once the first layer is fully dry, apply the topcoat. If you polished the first layer, apply two layers of colorless Douglas Stain with a brush or roller. If the first layer was applied with a brush or roller, one layer of colorless Douglas Stain is sufficient. Allow the topcoat to dry for 8–12 hours as well.
