Why do you need to protect epoxy with hardwax oil?

It is the trend of the moment: epoxy tables. With the help of epoxy, cracks and crevices in the wood can be filled and the wood protected. Some surfaces are completely submerged in epoxy, while others are only partially filled. However epoxy is applied, to ensure it lasts as long as possible, it must be optimally protected with an epoxy lacquer. However, your epoxy surface could use something better than an epoxy lacquer. Osmo Hardwax-Olie Original is ideally suited for protecting epoxy. Unlike an epoxy lacquer, Hardwax-Olie Original is easy to maintain and touch up locally. Hardwax-Olie Original protects epoxy for years against moisture, dirt, and damage. This way, you can enjoy it for years to come!

Why you should not varnish epoxy

Epoxy is a synthetic polymer consisting of two components: resin and hardener. Like wood, it is a porous material. This is advantageous, as it means it is capable of absorbing Osmo. Epoxy is often used to protect wood against moisture penetration; however, epoxy itself also needs to be protected. After all, it is a material that will quickly scratch if left untreated. By treating epoxy, you can optimally protect it against damage, such as scratches.

Various products can be used to protect epoxy. Epoxy owners often look for a lacquer to finish a surface. However, we would not recommend that. Instead of an epoxy lacquer, we prefer to recommend Osmo Hardwax-Olie Original.

Unlike lacquer, this product is easy to apply, can be touched up locally, and is available in various gloss levels. The Hardwax-Olie makes maintaining your epoxy table much easier. Especially when only a part of the table consists of epoxy, Hardwax Oil is a godsend: this way, both the wood and epoxy parts of the table can be treated with the same product, without the structure of the wood being lost.

Step-by-step plan for varnishing epoxy

To help you get started, we are happy to provide a step-by-step plan for applying Hardwax-Oil Original to epoxy.

1

To sand

Start by sanding the surface. This allows you to remove any old treatment layers and ensures a smooth surface to which the Hardwax Oil can adhere well. For an optimal end result, work with multiple sanding passes. For epoxy parts, we recommend sanding in a grit order of 120-240-320. For wooden parts, this is 40-80-120.

2

Make it dust-free

Clean the surface thoroughly and remove all dust. Use a dust cloth or vacuum cleaner for this. Preferably do not use water, as the surface must be completely dry before treatment.

4

Apply the first layer

Apply a thin layer of the Hardwax Oil with a pad or polishing cloth. Ensure that you buff the surface with a dry cloth within 20 minutes. This ensures that no excess product is left behind and that the product dries evenly.

Allow the product to dry for 8-10 hours. Ensure that the room is well ventilated during drying and that an optimal temperature of 23 degrees Celsius is maintained.

5

Apply another 2 to 3 layers.

The second, third, and fourth coats of the product should be applied in the same manner using a pad or polishing cloth. Allow these coats to dry for at least 8-10 hours as well and ventilate the room well.

6

Clean the table weekly with Osmo Spray Cleaner

Once all layers have dried, the table is ready for intensive use. To maintain the optimal appearance and protection of the epoxy, we recommend cleaning the table regularly with the Spray Cleaner. Because this product contains a small amount of wax, the treatment layer will be nourished during cleaning. For any minor damage such as scratches or stains, the Maintenance Wax can be used.
