How do I apply floor wax?
Waxing a wooden floor is the most traditional way to treat a wooden floor. Floor wax is suitable for treating untreated or sanded-down wood. The treatment colors the wood as if it were wet. Floor wax protects the floor against dirt and stains and makes it water-repellent. However, floor wax also has a major disadvantage when treating a wooden floor. That is why we explain why you are better off treating a wooden floor with Osmo Hardwax Oil.

Floor wax? Use Osmo Hardwax oil
Treating a wooden floor with floor wax has a protective effect. The major disadvantage of floor wax is that it often needs to be reapplied. It may be necessary to apply the floor wax every year or even every six months. This requires moving all furniture and objects out of the house to treat the floor again. Naturally, this takes a lot of time and energy. Floor wax also has a high consumption per m². Often, 1 liter of floor wax is only sufficient to treat 8 to 10 m². Consequently, you need many liters of floor wax to treat a wooden floor.
To avoid having to treat the entire floor again every year, you can treat the wooden floor with Osmo Hardwax Oil. A treatment with Osmo Hardwax Oil ensures that the wood is protected against moisture (coffee, water, and wine), dirt, and stains. The Hardwax Oil is made from vegetable oils and waxes, which provide long-lasting protection for wooden floors. The Hardwax Oil Original colors the wood as if it has been wet; we call this a wet-look effect. Hardwax oil is available in four different variants: Glossy, Silk Matte, Semi-Matte, and Matte. Additionally, Hardwax oil is available in various colors. These are shown below. On light wood types such as oak and beech, Hardwax Oil Effect Natural ensures that the floor remains light in color after treatment. Hardwax Oil Farbig is available in seven different colors. The color samples shown were created on oak wood.
Thanks to the high yield of the hardwax oil, you can treat as much as 24m² per coat with 1L. This ensures that you need very little product to treat a wooden floor. It is recommended to apply two thin coats with a microfiber roller to the sanded or untreated wood. Always apply the Hardwax oil in the direction of the planks and wood grain.

Remove wood floor wax
Do you have a floor that has been treated with Floor Wax and do you now want to treat it with another product such as Osmo Hardwax Oil? Then it is recommended to remove the Floor Wax first. Removal can be done by sanding the wooden floor. You can use a parquet sander for this. Start with grit 40; this will remove the Floor Wax from the wood. After sanding the floor with grit 40, go over it again with grit 80. And finally, sand the floor with the fine grit 120. This makes the floor scratch-free and ready for a new treatment.
Waxing a wooden floor
Ensure that the sanded or untreated wooden floor is clean and dust-free. You can wax a floor using a sponge, lint-free cloth, or polishing machine. Apply the wax thinly in the direction of the wood grain and dry polish it again after 2 to 4 hours. Hardwax Oil can be applied to a floor using a microfiber roller. This roller can be attached to a handle, so you do not have to scrub the floor on your hands and knees.
Applying Hardwax Oil
- Stir the product well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax have separated.
- Always perform a test on the surface first to check if the result has the desired effect.
- Apply the first layer of Hardwax Oil thinly to the new or sanded wood using a roller or floor brush. Roll or brush the product out well. Always apply it along the planks and the wood grain.
- Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush bristles.
- The drying time for the first layer is approximately 8-10 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). Drying takes longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Ensure good ventilation at all times. Therefore, make sure windows and doors are open.
- Apply the second finishing coat. Apply this in the same way as the first coat.
- Drying time: approx. 8-10 hours; see point 3.
Osmo Floor Wax
Osmo Hardwax Oil consists of a combination of oil and wax. Together, this combination ensures a beautiful appearance and good protection for the wood. At Osmo, we also sell a product made entirely of wax. This product is called Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax; this wax is suitable for treating localized wear spots that have appeared in floors treated with Osmo Hardwax Oil. The Liquid Maintenance Wax ensures that the wax content is restored.
Do you have a waxed floor and would you like to apply a new layer of floor wax? You can also use Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax for this purpose. However, always perform a test to check if the product adheres to the existing treatment and if you like the appearance. The Liquid Maintenance Wax can be applied using the Osmo Microfiber Cloth or the Easy Pad Polishing Cloths.
Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax is not suitable for treating untreated or sanded-down wood. For untreated wood, you can use Osmo Hardwax Oil.
