Which grey stain do you choose for exterior wood?

There are various options and finishes possible when staining wood grey. For instance, the wood can be treated with a transparent grey colour, but an opaque grey finish is also possible. These grey stains are highly suitable for treating fences, facades, patios, garden sheds, and garden furniture. You can read about the available possibilities and what to look out for when choosing the right stain below.

Benefits of Natural Oil Stain

  • Primer and topcoat in one
  • UV-resistant, weather and water-repellent.
  • High yield, 1L = treats 26m²
  • Based on natural substances

Why stain wood grey?

When wood is treated with an Osmo grey stain, it is protected against rain, sun, and dirt. The treatment creates an even grey protective layer. If wood is not treated, it will also grey over time. The disadvantage of letting it grey due to the sun is that the greying will not be uniform. The parts exposed to the most sun will grey faster than parts that are more in the shade. This will create very uneven coloring. There is also a chance that the wood will crack because it has not been treated.

With a treatment using Osmo Stain, it will turn an even grey color and the wood will not crack. The treatment ensures a longer lifespan for the wood.

Oil-based Grey Stain

All products from Osmo Netherlands are made from natural oils. This ensures that the wood is protected for longer and that it cannot crack or peel. Another major advantage of Osmo is the ability to touch up locally without sanding and that the wood can continue to breathe. Applying a new layer of grey stain can also be done without sanding. Water-based stains require touch-ups more frequently and may start to peel. Water-based stains also offer less effective protection against UV radiation and moisture. When applying a new coat of water-based stain, the surface must be sanded beforehand.

Transparent gray stain

Osmo Natural Oil Stain provides a transparent, and therefore non-opaque, grey appearance. This product is available in 4 different grey shades: 903, Basalt Grey – 905, Patina – 906, Pearl Grey – 907, and Quartz Grey. The Natural Oil Stain ensures an even grey treatment. This product creates a uniform greyed appearance that offers protection against UV radiation and moisture.

Opaque grey stain

In addition to a transparent appearance, it is also possible to create an opaque look. Osmo Country House Paint is the right product for this. This oil-based paint creates an opaque finish that offers protection against moisture, dirt, and UV radiation. Five different shades of grey are available in the Country House Paint: 2704, Stone Grey – 2708, Pebble Grey – 2716, Anthracite Grey – 2735, Light Grey – 2742, Traffic Grey.

Which types of wood to treat with grey stain?

Both the Natural Oil Stain and the Country House Paint can be applied to all outdoor wood. This includes hardwoods such as Afzelia, Bankirai, and Douglas fir, as well as softwoods such as oak, spruce, and pine.

Grey stain for oak wood

Oak wood can be treated very effectively with one of Osmo's grey stains. It is always advisable to let oak wood weather for six weeks first, as the oak wood needs to acclimate to the outdoor air. After the wood has weathered, it can be de-greyed with Osmo Power-Gel and then treated with a grey stain of your choice.

Grey stain for scaffolding wood

Scaffolding wood can also be treated with an opaque or transparent stain. After treatment, the scaffolding wood will acquire a beautiful grey look. In addition to the beautiful appearance, the wood is also better protected, allowing you to enjoy the wood for longer.

Applying grey stain to the wood

  1. Stir the Grey Stain well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the oils and color pigments have separated. Always perform a test on an inconspicuous area first to check if the result produces the desired effect.
  2. Apply the first coat of Grey Stain thinly to the new or sanded wood using a Brush, Microfiber Roller, or Brush. Apply the Stain thinly and roll/brush it out well.
  3. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 15 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush bristles.
  4. The drying time for the first coat is approximately 8-12 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). Drying takes longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. Therefore, ensure that windows and doors are open.
  5. Apply the second finishing coat in the same way as the first coat. Allow this coat to dry with good ventilation as well, as in step 4.
