Supplies for treating and maintaining a Jatoba floor

Jatoba Floor features

Floors made of Jatoba wood are often easy to recognize. Its distinctive color combination of orange, red, and brown stands out strongly. Jatoba wood is a tropical wood species found in Central and South America. This wood comes from the Hymenaea, which belongs to the legume family.

Jatoba is a very hard wood, which makes it highly wear-resistant. As a result, the wood is extremely suitable for use as flooring.

Treating a Jatoba wooden floor with Osmo

A Jatoba floor can be treated with Osmo. Because this wood species is a tropical wood, we recommend treating the wood with Osmo Clear Wax. Osmo Clear Wax, also known as hardwood oil, is the ideal product for treating hardwoods rich in oils. Tropical woods, such as Jatoba, often have the characteristic of absorbing products that are somewhat more difficult to handle, such as oil. Osmo Clear Wax is an oil and wax-based product, but with a minimal proportion of wax. Due to the small proportion of wax, it is easier for the Jatoba floor to absorb the Clear Wax. The Clear Wax is colorless and creates a wet-look effect on the Jatoba floor. It will make the wood slightly darker. By wetting the wood, you can see the color effect of the Clear Wax.

Are you going to work with Osmo outdoors? Then first read our comprehensive knowledge center article on wood oil for outdoor use.

Lighten Jatoba floor

When a Jatoba wood floor is sanded, the color of the wood becomes lighter. Because it is only possible to treat Jatoba wood with Osmo colorless Clear Wax, the color will darken again after treatment. Therefore, it is not possible to treat a Jatoba wood floor with a light color. Treating a Jatoba floor with a product containing white pigment can result in very uneven absorption, which can cause a white haze.

Sanding a Jatoba wood floor

Do you have a treated wooden floor? And do you want to sand and treat it? Then it is advisable to follow the following sanding steps: start with grit 40; this is a coarse grit that removes the old treatment. Then use grit 80 and finish with grit 120 to sand it beautifully evenly.

After sanding, the dust must be removed using a vacuum cleaner. The wood does not need to be degreased or cleaned with water.

Step-by-step plan for treating a Jatoba floor

Instructions for treating Jatoba floors

  1. Stir the Clear Wax thoroughly for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax will have separated.
  2. Always perform a test on the surface first to check if the result has the desired effect.
  3. Apply the first coat of Clear Wax to the untreated wood with a roller or floor brush on the new or sanded wood.
  4. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush bristles.
  5. The drying time for the first coat is approximately 12 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). Drying takes longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Ensure good ventilation at all times. Therefore, make sure windows and doors are open.
  6. Apply the second finishing coat with a microfiber roller or floor brush/brush. Then wipe off the excess Oil with a fleece pad or lint-free cloth. Drying in approx. 12 hours; see point 3. Note: always apply the Clear Wax in a very thin layer.

Jatoba floor maintenance

After treatment, it is recommended to maintain the Jatoba floor; this extends the lifespan of the treatment. Mop the floor once a week or every two weeks with Wisch-Fix. This product is mixed into the mop water. Mop the Jatoba floor with the mixture while damp.

If you experience signs of wear, Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax is the right product. Simply polish this product onto these worn spots, causing them to diminish.
