Varnish or stain an oak table?

It might sound a bit strange. You have a beautiful oak table, and then you decide to apply varnish or stain to it. However, staining your table is actually smart, as it will ensure your oak table is better protected against external influences. Whether it is the weather for a garden table or protecting your oak table against wine or coffee stains, using oak table stain ensures that the table is optimally protected.

Types of oak table stain

There are many types of oak table stain available. For many people, it is important that they can still enjoy the wood the oak table is made of. Therefore, a transparent layer is often chosen to be applied to the oak table. In this case, you can use Osmo TopOil. This will leave a transparent layer that protects your oak table. Furthermore, you can also choose between a colored oil and a colorless oil. If you are looking for a stain for your oak table that primarily colors the grain, you can use Osmo Decorwas transparent. However, should you wish to stain your oak table an opaque black, that is also always an option. Osmo Decorwas Creativ is perfect for this.

How to stain an oak table?

Once you have finally chosen a beautiful stain for your oak table, it is important to take a few other steps before you can apply it.

First of all, it is important to ensure that everything that should not be stained is masked off. For example, if you only want to stain the legs with Osmo Decorwas Creativ, you must ensure that no product ends up on the tabletop. You also prefer not to stain hinges unnecessarily. Masking is therefore important. After that, you need to take a few more steps before you can stain your table dark. Ideally, you should also cover the floor with old newspapers. After all, it would be a shame if stain ended up on your beautiful floor. Do not forget to stir the product well before you start, so that the oil and wax are well mixed. Next, you are ready to apply the stain. You do this using a brush or roller.

1. Shake the Stain (TopOil) well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax are separated.

2. Apply the first coat of Stain thinly with a roller or brush to the new or sanded wood. Do this along the grain and the plank. Rolling over thoroughly ensures an even appearance.

3. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. Think of roller marks or brush hairs.

4. The drying of the first coat takes approximately 8-10 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. Therefore, make sure windows and doors are open.

5. Apply the second coat in the same way as in point 2 (thinly). If a colored TopOil is chosen for the first layer, it is recommended to finish the second layer with a colorless variant (3028 or 3058).

6. The drying time of the TopOil is approximately 8-10 hours.

Staining an oak table black

Staining an oak table black is therefore possible with Osmo Decorwas Creativ. You can choose a black wash effect, where mainly the grain is colored, or an opaque black effect, where the wood remains opaque but the wood structure remains visible. Check the Decorwas Creativ page to see how both looks can be applied to the oak table. An example of an oak tabletop treated with Decorwas 3169 Black for an opaque effect is shown here.
