RAL meaning

The words RAL are known all over the world, but what do these 3 letters actually mean? RAL stands for ReichsAusschlüss für Lieferbedingungen; this name was coined in Germany. It represents the code system for paint and treatment colors. The numbers used for RAL colors are the same everywhere, so you can easily order the correct Osmo color abroad without any confusion. Did you know that all codes for white and black RAL colors lie between 9000 and 10000?

RAL 9010 & RAL 9005

The two most commonly used Osmo RAL variants are RAL 9005 and RAL 9010.

RAL 9010 Pure White

RAL 9010 stands for ‘Pure White’. This variant is white, but not too white, nor too creamy. This pure white is therefore the most popular white and suits many interiors as well as exteriors. If you are looking for a whiter variant than RAL 9010, then RAL 9016 ‘Traffic White’ is more suitable for you. Another RAL white version is RAL 9001. This version is more of a cream white than RAL 9010. Still following? Below we show an overview of the different white shades.

RAL 9005 Jet Black

In addition to the white RAL colors, we also have black in our range: RAL 9005 Jet Black. This color is the darkest variant available. Not every black is the same; there are differences here, just as with the white shades. If you are looking for a slightly less black RAL color, then RAL 9004 might be more suitable for you. This Osmo color is just slightly less black. RAL 9017 ‘Traffic Black’ sits between RAL 9010 and RAL 9004. RAL 9005 is used for treating fences and cladding. Additionally, it is a popular color for finishing window frames. Color examples can be seen below (from left to right: 9004 – 9017 – 9005).

Other popular RAL colors

In addition to white and black, Osmo offers many other color shades. Below, we show a few examples of these colors.

RAL 9016 Traffic White
RAL 9016 Traffic White is slightly whiter than RAL 9010. RAL 9016 is closer to pure white. When placed next to RAL 9016, RAL 9010 appears cream white.

RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey
RAL 7016 falls into the 7000 to 8000 grey shades series. This grey shade leans more towards black than white, making it a dark grey variant. This color is frequently used for wooden fences and window frames. The beautiful grey color stands out well on these surfaces, making them a real eye-catcher for the home.

RAL 7035 Light Grey
Like 7016, RAL 7035 is a grey color. The difference between these colors is that 7035 is lighter in color than 7016. This color exudes tranquility and warmth, which is why 7016 is often used for garden houses and garden furniture.

RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A
RAL 7042 falls between RAL 7016 and RAL 7035, making it a popular color. This color leans slightly towards greenish-grey, making it a perfect match for the wood in your garden.

Mixing RAL colors
Are you looking for a different RAL color than the one described above? No problem; we can mix any color into Osmo Country House Paint. This oil-based paint provides an opaque effect on the wood while preserving the wood grain.
