Products for oiling parquet

Oiling parquet

To oil the parquet, the wood must be untreated or sanded down to bare wood. Afterward, the parquet can be treated with a colorless or colored finish. Applying the oil is easy to do yourself and protects the wood against moisture and dirt. Below, we describe step-by-step how to oil a parquet floor.

1. Stir the Parquet Oil well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax are separated.

2. Always perform a test on the surface first to check if the result has the desired effect.

3. Apply the first layer of Hardwax Oil thinly to the new or sanded wood using a roller or floor brush. Roll or brush the product out well. Always apply it along the planks and the wood grain.

4. Mistakes that occurred during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush bristles. 5. The drying of the first coat takes approximately 8-10 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. Therefore, ensure that windows and doors are open.

6. Apply the second finishing coat. Apply this in the same way as the first coat.

7. Drying time approx. 8-10 hours; see point 3.

What is parquet?

Before describing which products can be used to treat parquet, we will first explain what parquet is. Parquet floors are made of non-solid wood. Parquet consists of a top layer of wood. The layers underneath the wood are often made of plywood. Many parquet floors are made of oak. To enjoy your parquet floor for as long as possible, it is recommended to treat it with Osmo. The products protect the wood against moisture, stains, and dirt.

Parquet oil colors

The Osmo range includes various colors for treating wood. This colored parquet oil is primarily intended for softwoods such as oak, beech, birch, pine, and spruce. Tropical hardwoods cannot be treated with colored products. For this, Osmo offers the Clear Wax 1101 in its range. This is a colorless product that colors the wood as if it were wet.

Gray Parquet Oil

Softwoods can therefore be treated with a color of your choice; think of a shade of gray. Osmo has various gray shades in its range. For example, the Hardwax Oil Farbig Light Gray 3067 or the Hardwax Oil Farbig 3074 Graphite. Both variants color the wood evenly and transparently, so it does not create an opaque effect.

There are also oils to color the wood grain gray. Osmo Oil Stain can be used for this; examples include the 3512 Silver Gray or the 3518 Light Gray.

White Parquet Oil
Osmo Netherlands also offers various shades of white. For a uniform, transparent white color, Hardwax Oil Farbig White 3040 can be applied. For a more natural color (untreated appearance), the wood can be treated with Hardwax Oil Effect Natural 3041.

To create a White Wash Effect (coloring the grain), Osmo Oil Stain 3501 can be used. For an opaque white parquet floor, Decor Wax 3188 Snow can be chosen.

In addition to white and gray, many other color shades can be found in the assortment. Think of brown and black, for example.

Hardwax Oil for parquet

Treating parquet with Hardwax Oil ensures that the parquet is protected against moisture and dirt. We always recommend applying Hardwax Oil Original Colorless as a top coat over a colored variant. This ensures that the color is preserved and that wear only occurs in the colorless layer, provided, of course, that the parquet is properly maintained. If the parquet is to be treated with only the Colorless Hardwax Oil, we recommend applying two coats for proper protection. This creates a wet-look effect. This colors the wood as if it has been wet; applying only Hardwax Oil Original therefore makes the wood darker in color.

Paint Oil Drying Time

The drying time for the colorless Hardwax Oil is between 8 and 12 hours. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. If there is insufficient ventilation or the Hardwax Oil is applied too thickly, the drying time may increase. The colored variants have a drying time of 12 to 24 hours. It is particularly important that the parquet is not used while the treatment is still sticky. If the wood is still sticky, the treatment has not yet fully dried.

The full curing time is 2 weeks. This does not mean that the parquet cannot be walked on during these 2 weeks. However, it is advised not to place rugs on the floor during these weeks and to avoid moving furniture too heavily.

Parquet Oil Maintenance
After a parquet floor has been treated with Osmo, occasional maintenance is also necessary. It is recommended to mop weekly or every other week with Osmo Wisch-Fix. In addition to cleaning the parquet, Wisch-Fix also nourishes the floor with a small amount of wax. This ensures that the floor wears down and dries out less quickly.

When light wear spots appear locally (usually after a year or two), these spots can be treated with Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax. After treatment, this product ensures that the wood is refreshed.
