Want to refurbish your kitchen countertop?

A wooden countertop wears down due to intensive use and can be damaged by moisture, dirt, or old lacquer layers. By properly preparing the countertop and treating it with Osmo TopOil, the surface becomes water-repellent, food-safe, and protected for a long time.

Products in this knowledge item;

Is it time to spruce up your countertop? A countertop is a surface that is often used very intensively. It is not surprising that it needs a makeover from time to time. Fortunately for you, refurbishing a wooden countertop is not difficult at all. With Osmo's TopOil, it is an easy job. Whether you simply want to refurbish your countertop or wish to apply a completely different color: you have come to the right place! We would be happy to explain how you can successfully and affordably refurbish your wooden countertop.

Refurbishing kitchen countertop

Are you planning to refurbish your wooden countertop? Refurbishing a countertop is by no means a difficult job, but you do need to set aside some time for it. To achieve an optimal end result, there are several steps you need to take. Is your countertop heavily damaged? Then your refurbishment begins with sanding the countertop. Even if there is still an old layer of lacquer or paint on it, you will first need to remove this by sanding. Sanding down completely is by no means always necessary; sometimes light sanding is sufficient to remove the old layer. Has the countertop previously been treated with an oil product? Then it might be possible to apply a layer of Osmo over it, but we do recommend testing this first using a sample. Is the countertop very dirty? Then it may be necessary to clean the countertop thoroughly, for example with the Osmo Intensive Cleaner.

Once the wooden countertop is fully prepared, a new treatment can be applied. For refurbishing a countertop, we recommend using Osmo TopOil. This product is ideal for application on furniture surfaces or worktops, such as a kitchen countertop. Osmo TopOil creates a water-repellent surface and is completely food-safe after drying; ideal for a kitchen countertop!

Untreated look

Do you want to refurbish a wooden countertop without altering the wood's color? Then we recommend using TopOil 3068 Natural. Because this product contains a small amount of white pigment, this treatment will not deepen the wood's color but will keep it light. Are you working with a dark wood surface? Then we do not recommend using TopOil 3068 Natural. On dark surfaces, this product will leave a white haze.

Would you prefer to deepen the color and grain of the wood? Then we recommend one of our colorless TopOil variants. These products give the wood a permanent wet look, causing the surface to darken slightly. It gives the wood the same coloring as if you were to slightly dampen the countertop.

Two-layer system

Are you planning to apply a TopOil with color pigment, for example in the color White, Terra, Graphite, or Acacia? Then we recommend finishing the surface with one of the colorless variants of the TopOil, such as the TopOil 3028 silk-matte or the TopOil 3058 matt. By applying a colorless top layer to the countertop, you ensure an easy-to-maintain surface that can be easily touched up in the future without color differences occurring. Moreover, scratches and other wear will be significantly less visible in a colorless layer.

Refurbishing a concrete countertop

Is your countertop made of concrete or finished with polished concrete? Even then, it is possible to refurbish your countertop with Osmo products. We have developed Osmo Concrete Oil specifically for porous stone surfaces. Thanks to the concrete oil, a moisture-repellent and scratch-resistant surface is created that is completely food-safe after drying. It ensures that the concrete countertop is easy to clean, produces less dust, and lasts longer. Osmo Concrete Oil is not only suitable for concrete; this product can also be applied to other porous (natural) stone surfaces.

Preparations to refurbish countertop

Before you start refurbishing the countertop, you need to make a number of preparations. You can only achieve an optimal result when the surface is thoroughly clean, dry, and dust-free. Therefore, start by clearing the countertop. Remove all items so that you have good access to everything. Don't forget to remove your sink as well. Is that not possible? Then make sure to tape it off properly to prevent damage. Is the countertop empty? Then you can begin cleaning and/or sanding the surface.

Does the countertop contain an old layer of lacquer or paint? If so, this must be sanded first. Sanding ensures that the surface becomes smooth and even again and that scratches and/or old treatments are removed. For sanding the countertop, we recommend a grit order of 40-80-120. This creates an even surface to which the new treatment can easily adhere. Make sure the surface is completely dust-free after sanding. This ensures the best final result.

Apply Osmo TopOil to the countertop

Have all preparations been made? Then it is time to apply TopOil. To help you get started, we are happy to provide a step-by-step plan for applying TopOil to your wooden countertop.

Make sure to shake the can well before use. This ensures that the ingredients and pigment in the product are thoroughly mixed.

Next, apply a thin polishing layer of the product. Do this with an Osmo White Pad with Handpad holder, or an Easypad polishing cloth. Work in the direction of the grain. To create an even appearance and to prevent applying too much product, we recommend buffing the surface afterwards with an Osmo Fleece Pad and Handpad holder. Work in the direction of the grain here as well.

Then let the polishing layer dry for 10 to 12 hours. Only when the surface is completely dry can a new polishing layer be applied.

Once all polishing coats are fully dry, the countertop is ready for heavy use. Reinstall the sink or remove the tape and enjoy your new kitchen!

We recommend applying four polishing coats of TopOil; this is sufficient to optimally protect the surface.

Applying more? There is a risk that the treatment will peel off. Fewer polishing coats may result in less effective protection. Are you working with color?

Then we recommend applying two polishing coats of the colored treatment and two polishing coats of the colorless treatment.
