What is scaffolding wood and why do you need to treat it?

Scaffolding wood is made from softwood, in many cases spruce. The wood owes its name to the fact that spruce planks were widely used for scaffolding in the construction industry. Currently, this wood is also widely used for furniture. Treating scaffolding wood is recommended, and the wood also absorbs oil well.

Benefits of Osmo Scaffold Wood Oil

  • Eco-friendly oil, made from natural ingredients for lasting protection
  • Transparent finish, allowing the wood grain to remain visible
  • The oil penetrates deep into the wood and is easy to apply with a brush
  • The beautiful natural color of the wood is preserved

Step-by-step guide to applying scaffolding wood oil

  1. Prepare the wood well before treatment. Ensure the wood is bare so the oil can penetrate properly.
  2. First, perform a test on the surface to see if the result produces the desired effect. Scaffold wood is known for its absorbent properties, so also test the consumption.
  3. Stir the product well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax are separated.
  4. Apply the first coat with a flat brush or floor brush to sanded or untreated wood.
  5. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 15 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush bristles.
  6. The first coat takes approximately 12 hours to dry. Drying takes longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Ensure good ventilation at all times. Therefore, ensure that it is not applied during bad weather or rain.
  7. Apply the second coat of Scaffold Wood Oil. Apply this in the same way as the first coat. For horizontal sections, you can also choose to apply Osmo Terrace Oil Anti-Slip as a third layer. This creates an anti-slip surface. The scaffolding wood oil dries quickly in approximately 12 hours; see point 6.

Supplies for oiling scaffolding wood

Which scaffolding wood oil should I choose?

When you want to treat scaffolding wood outdoors, we recommend using outdoor products such as:

  • Osmo Terrace Oil; this oil is highly suitable for decking or outdoor furniture. Ribbed jetties or terraces are best treated with a Terrace Brush.
  • If you want to protect a scaffolding wood fence against UV radiation, we often recommend Osmo UV Protection Oil.
  • Osmo Natural Oil Stain when you want to stain scaffolding wood with an oil-based stain instead of a water-based one. You can also use this to create a white wash or grey wash effect.
  • Use Osmo Country House Paint when you want to keep the grain visible but want to color the wood opaquely.

With these oils, you can effectively protect your scaffolding wood outdoors and extend its lifespan. These products also come in various colors to darken the wood color. Oil-based products weather naturally, preventing them from cracking or peeling.

Staining scaffolding wood: for a transparent coloring or wash effect.

One way to extend the lifespan of your scaffolding wood and change its color is by treating it with stain. The benefits of stain are:

  • Stain preserves the matte appearance of the wood while simultaneously giving it a different shade.
  • Stain is also available in semi-opaque colors such as white wash or grey wash.
  • Colored stain provides good protection against all weather conditions, such as UV radiation.

At Osmo, we have Osmo Natural Oil Stain. You can apply our scaffolding wood stain with a brush. Additionally, the stain is available in various colors. When you choose a colored scaffolding wood stain, the wood is protected against UV radiation. Please note that weather conditions have a significant impact on the lifespan of the treatment.

Painting scaffolding wood: for an opaque finish

  • You can use paint to give your scaffolding wood an opaque color.
  • When you paint your scaffolding planks, the wood grain remains visible.

Are you going to paint a piece of furniture or a fence? Osmo Country House Paint is an opaque paint that is highly resistant to UV radiation. It is best to paint with a roller or brush. Depending on the absorbency of the surface, you can choose to use a primer or wood impregnation before applying the paint.

Treating scaffolding wood garden furniture

Scaffolding wood garden furniture can be treated with Osmo Natural Oil Stain to make it water-repellent and protect it against mold and algae. When you treat scaffolding wood furniture all around with Osmo, the risk of warping is significantly reduced.

Additionally, treatment is important to protect the scaffolding wood garden furniture against weather influences and wear for a long time.

Tip: When you finish with a white stain followed by a colorless/transparent oil, you retain the original color of the garden furniture. When you stain the garden furniture in a color, it is more resistant to UV.

Conclusion

  • Prepare the wood well. Scaffold wood can be heavily greyed. In that case, ensure you clean the wood with Osmo Power-Gel Wood Degreaser.
  • If the scaffold wood is very rough, it may absorb more oil than expected. Test the product you are going to use beforehand, and if the surface has a strong absorbent effect, impregnate it first. This ensures better consumption of the final treatment.
  • You prevent scaffold wood from warping by allowing the planks to dry thoroughly before you start working with them. The wood has the property of retaining a lot of moisture. By treating the scaffold wood all around, you prevent it from warping if it comes into contact with water.
  • You can treat the wood with oil, stain, and paint. Depending on the product and application method, you can achieve a different look. The most natural finish is the colorless Natural Oil Stain; this gives a matte effect and deepens the color of the wood. To preserve the original color, it is best to apply a stain with white pigments and finish it with a colorless/transparent oil. When you treat the garden furniture with color, it becomes more resistant to UV radiation.
