To optimize the lifespan, appearance, and protection of indoor teak furniture, you can choose to treat it with oil or a product like Osmo. Treat teak wood or not?
Although teak is naturally highly resistant to moisture and mold, treating it indoors is still recommended. Over time, untreated teak can become dull, develop stains, or dry out. By treating it with oil or Osmo products, you extend its lifespan, preserve the color, and prevent stains and damage.
Some people choose to leave outdoor teak untreated for a natural, weathered look. This is an aesthetic choice, but it does carry risks, such as staining from water or grease. Treatment is therefore usually the best choice for furniture that is used intensively, such as teak garden tables.
Treating teak wood with oil
Treating teak wood with oil is a popular method to protect the wood and preserve its natural appearance. Oil penetrates deep into the wood and protects against moisture, dirt, and mold from within. This helps prevent problems such as wood rot and discoloration. Oil is typically transparent and non-film-forming, allowing the wood to bring out and deepen its natural color.
For indoor use, it is preferable to use a low-odor, low-solvent teak oil or a special furniture oil. You can easily apply the oil with a brush, roller, or cloth. Allow the oil to soak in well and remove excess oil with a lint-free cloth. Repeat this process until the wood no longer absorbs oil. It is recommended to repeat the treatment periodically, for example, once every six months, depending on the use and stress on the furniture.

Dit product combineert natuurlijke oliën en wassen en biiedt een duurzame, water- en vuilafstotende bescherming, zonder dat het teakhout zijn natuurlijke uitstraling verliest. Teakhout behandelen voor buiten

Olie trekt in het hout, voorkomt uitdroging en maakt het waterafstotend. Voor het mooiste resultaat gebruik je een transparante teakolie die speciaal geschikt is voor buitengebruik. Breng de olie met een platte kwast in de richting van de houtnerf aan, laat goed intrekken en verwijder overtollige olie met een pluisvrije doek. Herhaal deze behandeling elk jaar 2 à 3 keer, of vaker indien nodig.
Osmo biedt ook speciale buitenproducten voor het behandelen van teakhout. Deze producten beschermen het hout en behouden de kleur. Een nieuwe laag Osmo wordt doorgaans elke 3 tot 6 jaar aanbevolen.

Cleaning teak wood
It is important that when treating teak wood, you clean it of any old lacquer layer or dirt. Or, when performing maintenance, you clean the teak of superficial dirt or stains. This is because when re-oiling it, the oil may not penetrate properly, or the stains may actually become lighter.
Cleaning indoor teak furniture
Before treating teak wood, thorough cleaning is essential. Clean the surface and remove dust, grease, and any old wax or oil layers.
An already treated surface can be wiped down with a slightly damp cloth or a wood cleaner that does not compromise the protection, such as the Osmo Spray-Cleaner.
Use a soft cloth for this and, if necessary, an intensive cleaner. For stubborn stains or grayed wood, you can clean the surface with a Wood De-grayer to reveal the original color.
Ensure that the wood is completely dry before you begin oiling or treating with Osmo products. This will give you the best result and prevent stains or uneven absorption of the product.
Teakhouten tuinmeubelen schoonmaken
Teakhouten tuinmeubelen moeten eerst vergrijzen voordat Olie of Osmo goed kan hechten. Vergrijzing ontstaat door verwering. Teak wood maintenance
Teak wood requires little maintenance, as long as you use the right products:
- Clean the wood 1 to 2 times a year
- Prevent green deposits and damp spots
- Touch up with oil or wax as soon as the surface looks dull
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents such as chlorine
Regular maintenance extends the lifespan of your teak (garden) furniture and keeps it looking beautiful. In addition to periodic oiling, it is recommended to clean the wood occasionally and remove dirt or stains immediately. Check the surface for damage or discoloration and lightly sand if necessary before applying a new coat of oil. With proper maintenance, teak tables can last for years, even if they are left outdoors all year round.
Colors and appearance
With a colorless treatment, teak wood retains its warm, natural color, but if you like weathered teak or a grey wash outdoors, it is also possible to ‘pre-weather’ it. This ensures the wood retains its well-maintained appearance and prevents mold and moisture from penetrating the wood.
