How do I treat my oak floor?

Oak floors have been very popular for years and can therefore be found in many households. This is due to the modern yet natural appearance of the wood. Oak floors can be treated with various color effects, ensuring an oak floor fits into any home.

Oak floors

Oak floors come in all kinds of varieties, colors, and sizes. For instance, there are oak herringbone floors or straight-laid oak floors. There are also different types of oak wood. The best-known types are American oak, European oak, and smoked oak.

In addition to the type of oak, there is also a choice regarding the types of oak flooring. For example, you can choose engineered oak parquet. These floors are made with a wooden top layer and a plywood underlay.

There are also solid oak floors. These floors consist of 100% oak wood, and therefore without an underlay of another material.

Treating an oak floor with Osmo

Once you have chosen an oak floor, it is advisable to treat it. Untreated wood damages easily, which is, of course, a shame. Oak wood can be treated with a variety of products. If you are looking for a product that offers protection against water, coffee, and wine, you have come to the right place with Osmo products.

Treating an oak floor without color
Treating an oak floor with the colorless Hardwax Oil Original gives a beautiful result. The product is colorless because it contains no color pigments. However, this product brings out the natural color of the wood; it deepens the color. This colorless Hardwax Oil colors the wood as if it has been wet. It therefore becomes slightly darker. The colorless variant does not color the wood to look as if it is untreated. The light/untreated appearance is described below.

Light oak floor
A new sanded oak floor has a beautiful light color. To preserve this color scheme for as long as possible, Osmo offers a combination of two products. For the first coat, use Hardwax Oil Effect Natural 3041. This product contains a small amount of white pigment, ensuring that the wood does not darken and that the light color of the oak is preserved. For the second coat, we recommend Hardwax Oil Original Colorless. By treating the second coat with the colorless (Hardwax Oil Original) variant, the floor can be easily touched up in the event of wear or damage without any color difference. The color layer applied with the 3041 remains intact, allowing you to easily touch up and maintain the top colorless layer with a colorless product.

White oak floor
Are you looking for a white but non-opaque color for your floor? Then you can consider Hardwax Oil Farbig White 3040. This colors the oak wood a transparent white. Below you will find an overview of the various color options for an oak floor.

White wash oak floor
A white wash creates a beautiful effect on oak floors. With a white wash, the wood grain is primarily colored. This makes the floor very lively. The Osmo Oil Stain is the right product to create this effect.

Oak floor grey wash
In addition to a White Wash, other color effects can also be created on the oak floor. A popular color is grey. A Grey Wash fits well in an industrial interior. Other possibilities include black or cognac brown, for example. You can also use the Osmo Oil Stain for these; there are three grey variants: light grey, graphite, and silver grey.

Oak floor maintenance

After the oak floor has been treated with a product of your choice, it is advisable to maintain the floor properly. This ensures you will enjoy the wood for much longer. We recommend mopping weekly with Wisch-Fix. This product contains a small amount of wax and ensures that the floor remains nourished and does not dry out. We also advise treating high-traffic areas such as the kitchen and hallway with Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax after approximately two years. You will notice that these areas start to wear slightly, but using this product will refresh the floor. As a result, the floor looks like new again.

Sanding and treating oak floor

Do you already have a treated floor and want to sand it yourself? Then keep the following tips in mind.

For floors, it is recommended to use a parquet sander. It is advisable to sand the floor with grit sizes: 40 – 80 – 120. So, start with grit 40. This is a coarse grit that removes the old treatment. Next, sand the floor with grit 80 to reduce any scratches caused by grit 40. For the final sanding pass, use grit 120. This ensures that the wood absorbs the Osmo well and evenly.

Once the floor has been sanded bare, it can be treated with a product of your choice. All possible treatments for a sanded oak floor are listed above.
