Do you wish to give your light wooden table or floor a white wash effect? Then choose white wash oil. White wash oil colors the wood grain white, making the natural wood structure stand out better. Additionally, the wood acquires a light haze or coating. At Osmo, we have several white wash oils for wooden floors and for wooden table and kitchen countertops. You can also achieve a wash effect with other colors. In addition to white wash oil, we also have Grey wash stain at Osmo.

Please note that if the floor has been thermally treated or has a naturally dark color, a White Wash Oil may produce a different effect than the examples we show. It is therefore best to test the white wash oil with a sample first.

The best white wash oil for a wooden floor

At Osmo, we offer several options to create a white wash effect on your floor. We offer 3 different white wash oils:

Osmo Hardwax-Oil Farbig ‘White’ (3040) – Light white wash effect
This white wash oil contains the least white pigment of the three white wash oils. The Hardwax-Oil Farbig colors evenly and gives the floor a uniform coloring. This white wash oil provides the most transparent effect. We recommend polishing and/or rolling 1 coat. After polishing, you must roll 2 coats of Osmo Hardwax-Oil Original over it. After rolling 1 coat, we recommend rolling only 1 coat of Hardwax-Oil Original over it.

Osmo Oil Stain ‘White’ (3501) – Standard white wash effect
This variant has more white pigment than the Hardwax-Oil Farbig ‘White’. The Oil Stain colors the grain, bringing out the natural wood structure more. If you use Osmo Oil Stain as a white wash oil, we recommend buffing 1 coat with a lint-free cloth or Osmo white pad. After buffing in the Osmo Oil Stain, you must then wipe away the excess product applied. Wipe away or buff out the white wash stain with a microfiber cloth. We then recommend rolling 2 coats of Hardwax Oil Original over this. Read more about the White wash stain.

Osmo Decor Wax Transparent (3111) – Intensive white wash effect
Of the three options, Osmo Decor Wax Transparent contains the most pigment and therefore provides the most intensive white wash effect. It colors both the grain and the wood of the floor. We recommend buffing this color at most once to create a white wash effect. We then recommend rolling 2 coats of Hardwax Oil Original over this.

Once you have applied one coat of white wash to the wooden floor, we recommend applying another one to two coats of colorless hardwax oil. You can use the colorless hardwax oil to effectively protect the wooden floor against scratches, stains, and moisture. Additionally, this layer determines the level of gloss the floor achieves. Carefully read the product description to determine whether one or two coats are required.

Drying time of white wash oil on a wooden floor

After applying the white wash oil, the floor will need some time to dry. How long this takes depends on the indoor climate. It is important to ventilate the room well after applying the oil. We recommend waiting 24 hours after the white wash layer and another 24 hours after the colorless layer. Finally, it is advisable not to place or slide heavy furniture on the floor for two weeks. During this time, the hardwax layer hardens.

Applying white wash oil to an oak floor

Osmo White wash oils are ideally suited for oak floors. The advantage of an oak floor is that it is easy to color. White wash oak floors are timeless and therefore very popular.

Step-by-step plan for whitewashing a wooden floor

1. Stir the White wash oil well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the oil and wax have separated. Always perform a test on the surface first to check if the result has the desired effect.

2. Apply the first coat to the new or sanded wood using a White Pad or a lint-free cloth.

3. Within 20 minutes, wipe away the excess product along the grain with the Fleece pad. Then buff the oil dry with it.

4. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. Examples include roller marks or brush hairs.

5. The first coat takes approximately 24 hours to dry (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). Drying takes longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Ensure proper ventilation at all times. Therefore, make sure windows and doors are open.

6. For a white wash effect, the surface must be finished with Hardwax-Olie Original Colorless. For 1 coat of polishing, 2 coats of Hardwax Oil must be applied. For 2 coats of polishing or 1 coat of rolling, 1 coat of Hardwax Oil Original is sufficient. The Hardwax Oil should be rolled thinly with the Osmo Microfiber Roller and subsequently not polished out. Always roll along the plank and wood grain.

7. The drying time for Hardwax-Olie Original Colorless is approximately 24 hours.

Table white wash oil

Light wooden tables are also very suitable for a white wash treatment. The Osmo Topoil ‘White’ (3037) white wash oil is also suitable for a table. The treatment for a table is slightly different from what we recommend for a floor. Therefore, please read the TopOil instructions carefully before using it.
