Why a white wash stain?

You might already be somewhat familiar with the term ‘white wash’, but besides white, there are many more colors available in this genre. Think of black, grey, brown, or even pink. A wash effect gives wood a typical rugged look with a somewhat vintage appearance. Oak is a type of wood that lends itself perfectly to this wash look, but this appearance can certainly be applied to other types of wood as well. A ‘wash’ owes its charm to the light haze it leaves on wooden surfaces. This is due to the application method: the stain is actually rubbed into the wood.

Does a white wash stain protect the surface?

All Osmo products offer your wood the same years of protection, and the White Wash Stain is no exception. The White Wash Stain also contains our unique oil and wax combination, which ensures that wood is optimally protected against moisture, dirt, and damage. However, for maintenance purposes, we recommend applying a colorless hardwax oil topcoat on top of the White Wash layer. This colorless layer will provide a long-lasting protected surface that is easier to maintain in the future.

How do you create a white wash effect?

The trick to a White Wash effect lies not in the product, but in the application method. While it is often customary to use a brush or roller when painting, a polishing cloth or pad is used for a wash effect. This allows the wood to absorb a small amount of product, creating light coverage. Due to the low amount of product, the wood's structure remains visible and the grain is accentuated. Polishing is not a difficult task, but it can be physically demanding. For a large surface, such as a floor, we therefore recommend using a polishing machine.

Applying white wash stain

1

Preparation

Prior to staining, the wood must be prepared. Any existing paint, varnish, or treatment layer must be removed. The easiest way to do this is by sanding. To achieve as smooth a surface as possible, we recommend starting with a coarse grit and finishing with a fine grit. White Wash Stain adheres best to a smooth surface. New or untreated wood in good condition does not need to be sanded. The product can be applied directly to this.

2

Stirring

Stir the product thoroughly for 2 minutes. Stirring ensures that the product's ingredients are well mixed. Use the stirring stick included with your order for this purpose.

3

To polish

Rub the product into the wood. Do this with a white pad or a lint-free cloth. Apply a thin layer and ensure you buff it well into the wood. Did you make a mistake during application? Don't worry, these can be corrected up to 30 minutes after applying the product.

4

Let dry

The first coat needs to dry for 8 to 12 hours. Ensure the room is well ventilated by opening windows and doors wide, as the White Wash stain needs to dry through oxidation.

5

Top layer

Once the first coat has completely dried, you can begin applying the top coat. For optimal surface protection, we recommend applying two coats of colorless Hardwax Oil. This ensures the surface is protected for as long as possible. It is best to use a brush or roller to apply the top coat. The top coat also needs to dry for 8 to 12 hours in a well-ventilated room.

6

Second layer

Once the first top coat is completely dry, you can apply the second top coat of Hardwax Oil. Allow this layer to dry thoroughly as well. When all layers are completely dry, the surface is ready for heavy use. Wait at least two months before placing rugs and floor-covering furniture back on the surface to prevent discoloration of the floor.
