Natural wood oil
Wood is a natural product, therefore it is recommended to treat it with a natural product as well. All Osmo outdoor products are made from natural, plant-based oils and waxes. These ingredients ensure that the wood is protected against all types of weather, such as UV radiation and rain. This excellent protection ensures that the wood can remain outdoors all year round. Therefore, use an Osmo outdoor wood oil to treat and protect the wood.
Benefits of UV Protection Oil
- With protective film layer against UV rays
- Slows down the graying process with UV SPF 12
- Ideal for all vertical wooden surfaces
- Based on natural, plant-based oils and waxes
Wood oil for outside
Osmo offers various outdoor wood oils in its range. All these products are based on a natural oil base. This ensures that the treatment will not crack or peel. Furthermore, sanding is not required when applying a new layer; the wood only needs to be cleaned. This makes the treatment very low-maintenance.
There are four different Osmo products that can be used to treat outdoor wood. All types of wood can be treated with these products, so wooden garden furniture can also be treated with Osmo. The range includes transparent and opaque wood oils.
Osmo Terrace Oil
Osmo Terrace Oil is particularly suitable for treating terraces and garden furniture. This wood oil colors the wood to match the color of the oil and is available in 10 different wood colors. These colors are named after the corresponding wood species, but any color can be applied to any outdoor wood type. Therefore, Osmo Bankirai Oil can be perfectly applied to Douglas fir, for example. All variants of the Terrace Oil with color pigment protect the wood against UV radiation. This ensures that the wood greys less quickly. The colorless wood oil causes the wood to grey faster.
Osmo UV Protection Oil
The UV Protection Oil is intended for all vertical outdoor wood. It is suitable for treating posts, pergolas, facades, and fences. With SPF 12, this wood oil provides good protection against greying. SPF 12 means that it protects 12 times better than if it had not been treated. The colors of the UV protection oil are all very natural, giving it a beautiful appearance.
Alternatives to UV Protection Oil
Osmo Natural Oil Stain
Osmo Natural Oil Stain is an oil-based wood oil. After treatment, a protective surface is created. With this transparent treatment, the wood grain and structure remain visible. Natural Oil Stain is a versatile product suitable for treating all exterior wood, such as fences, patios, and garden furniture. This product is available in 19 different colors and 1 colorless variant.
Osmo Country House Paint
Osmo Country House Paint creates opaque protection for exterior wood. This product is widely used for facades and garden houses. This opaque wood oil is available in 21 different colors and offers protection against moisture, dirt, and UV radiation.
Wood oil colours
In total, there are 60 different colors to treat exterior wood. Therefore, there are many different options to choose from. To make this choice easier, Osmo Netherlands has test packages in its range. These samples are sufficient to treat an area of approximately 20 by 20 cm. This allows you to create a clear example on your own wood. This makes choosing the right product easier.
Colorless wood oil
Osmo has 3 different colorless wood oils in its range. A colorless wood oil colors the wood when wet, causing it to become slightly darker. The UV Protection Oil 420 is the only colorless variant that provides protection against UV radiation. This product is only suitable for treating vertical wood, such as facades, fences, and sheds. The Natural Oil Stain 701 dries to a matte finish and is suitable for treating all exterior wood. The Terrace Oil 007 colorless dries to a satin matte finish and is suitable for treating terraces and decking. Therefore, neither the 701 nor the 007 provides protection against UV radiation, which will cause the wood to grey. However, the products do offer protection against moisture, dirt, and mold.
Dark Wood Oil
The Osmo range includes various dark colors for treating wood. There are transparent brown shades such as Terras-Olie 016 Bankirai Dark and Natuurlijk Olie-Bestain 708 Teak. These dark colors provide a transparent coloring to the wood, allowing the wood grain and structure to remain visible. There are also dark opaque colors; for these, you can look at the Country house paint.
White Wood Oil
There are 3 different white variants available for treating exterior wood. The Country house paint gives the wood an opaque white appearance and is available in the color RAL 9010 Pure White and RAL 9016 Traffic White; the latter is called 2101 White on the website. For a more transparent white appearance, Natural Oil Stain 900 can be used.
Black Wood Oil
The Country House Paint RAL 9005 Jet Black provides an opaque black finish on the wood. This variant is frequently used on fences and barns, but also on posts and pergolas. Additionally, there is the 2703 Anthracite; this dark wood oil is close to black, but turns slightly less black than the RAL 9005. The wood can also be treated with the Natural Oil Stain 712 Ebony. This black variant provides a transparent black appearance, allowing the natural wood color to remain more visible.
Grey Wood Oil
The Natural Oil Stain is the product for oiling wood grey. The 905 Patina colors the wood as if it has greyed evenly. If you let wood grey without treatment, it will always grey unevenly. After treatment with a wood oil, the wood is protected against moisture, UV radiation, dirt, and fungi. For an opaque grey appearance, Country House Paint can be used to treat the wood. This can be done, for example, with 2704 Stone Grey, 2708 Pebble Grey, 2716 Anthracite Grey, or 2735 Light Grey.
Douglas Wood Oil
Several oils can be used to treat Douglas wood. For a Douglas fence, for example, the UV protection oil 427 Douglas can be used. With this, the Douglas color of the wood remains most intact. For a Douglas terrace, Osmo Terrace Oil Douglas 004 can be used. If you are looking for a completely different look for the wood, a different color can also be applied. For example, you can choose a beautiful gray or brown Douglas fir oil.
Bankirai Wood Oil
Bankirai wood is widely used for terraces, but which wood oil is best for this type of wood? At Osmo Netherlands, we have two variants of Bankirai Oil: Bankirai Oil Light 006 and Bankirai Oil 016 Dark. To create a completely different look, you can also choose a different color of wood oil.
Spruce Wood Oil
Spruce and other outdoor wood types can also be treated with one of the wood oils from Osmo Netherlands. The wood oil ensures that the spruce lasts longer than it would without treatment. It protects against moisture, dirt, and UV radiation (except for colorless variants 007 and 701).
Applying Wood Oil
All variants of Osmo wood oil are applied in the same way. However, please check the product page of the respective products for the coverage rate. The application method for the wood oil is described below.
1. Stir the outdoor wood oil well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the oil and wax have separated. Always perform a test on the surface first to check if the result has the desired effect.
2. Apply the first coat of outdoor wood oil to the new or sanded wood using a brush, block brush, or microfiber roller. For rough wood, it is best to use a brush; for smooth wood, you can use a brush or roller.
3. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 15 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush bristles.
4. The drying time for the first coat indoors is approximately 8-12 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. Therefore, ensure that windows and doors are open.
5. Apply the second finishing coat. Apply this in the same way as the first coat.
6. Drying in approx. 8-12 hours; see point 4.
