3 Methods to Maintain Your Wooden Floor

2. Renovating Refurbishing the floor without sanding

3. Repairing damage Repairing minor damage, such as scratches

Maintaining your wooden floor by mopping

An Osmo-treated surface or an oiled floor should be mopped regularly with Osmo Wisch-Fix. The product contains wax, which ensures that the wood is nourished and does not dry out. It is recommended to use Wisch-Fix every week or every other week. Its action is very effective; it removes invisible dirt and ensures a longer lifespan for the surface. Wisch-Fix can easily be mixed with warm water, approximately 1 capful per 2 liters of water. You can use the Osmo Floor Cleaning Set for mopping.

Wisch-Fix is colorless and suitable for any treated wooden floor. It does not matter whether the floor has been treated with or without color. Read the blog about mopping wooden floors to get more information about mopping and the product.

Cleaning products
It is not recommended to use other cleaning products such as all-purpose cleaners and ammonia to clean a wooden floor. These aggressive cleaners can cause stains and other unsightly damage. Use only Osmo products to clean the treated floor.

Refreshing worn areas
Over time, a wooden floor will suffer from localized wear. This occurs especially in high-traffic areas such as the kitchen and the hallway. To refresh these areas of the wooden floor, Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax is the right product. The wax can easily be applied to the clean wood and buffed out. After drying, approximately 40 minutes, the floor is refreshed. Osmo Maintenance Wax is usually used after about two years. It is recommended to apply it to these worn areas every six months. You can use the Osmo Floor Cleaning Set to apply the Maintenance Wax. In addition to refreshing worn areas, Liquid Maintenance Wax is also suitable for cleaning stubborn stains such as shoe polish, marker streaks, and grease.

Liquid Maintenance Wax is available in two variants. The colorless Maintenance Wax 3029 is suitable for the maintenance of all wooden floors that have a colorless or colored topcoat finish.

Do you have a wooden floor finished with a white topcoat? Then Maintenance Wax White 3087 is the right variant for you. This variant contains a proportion of white pigment in the product. This variant (3087 White) is intended exclusively for wooden surfaces that have been treated with a white product.

You will notice that after years of using the Liquid Maintenance Wax, the product will work less effectively. The areas of wear will be too worn, meaning the product can no longer do its job properly. If this is the case, it is time to give the wooden floor a new protective layer. In this situation, Osmo Intensive Cleaner and Osmo Maintenance Oil are the right combination to maintain the wooden floor.

Renovating a wooden floor

Wear and tear can occur on a wooden floor that has been used extensively over the years. To renovate a wooden floor, Osmo offers maintenance products in its range that will restore the floor. This can even be done without sanding. For renovating a wooden floor, the Maintenance Oil in combination with the Intensive Cleaner are the right products.

The Osmo Maintenance Oil is the diluted version of the Hardwax Oil and applies a new protective layer to an already treated wooden floor. However, it is important that the floor has been treated with an oil-based product beforehand. If the floor has been treated with a lacquer or a water-based stain or product, the Maintenance Oil cannot be applied to these wooden floors.

By applying the Maintenance Oil to the wooden floor at the right time, time-consuming sanding jobs can be avoided. It is, after all, applying a new layer without the need for sanding. The Maintenance Oil is also suitable for changing the gloss level of the surface. For example, if you have a wooden floor treated with Hardwax Oil 3032 Silk Matte and you prefer a matte appearance, you can treat the floor with the Maintenance Oil Matte.

The Maintenance Oil is applied to the entire wooden floor, unlike the Liquid Maintenance Wax, which is only applied locally to areas of wear. Before maintaining the floor with the Maintenance Oil, it is important that the floor is first cleaned with the Osmo Intensive Cleaner. This powerful cleaner removes all dirt from the wooden floor. This ensures that the wood is clean again before treatment with the Maintenance Oil. The Intensive Cleaner and the Maintenance Oil can be applied using Osmo Pads; for performing the job standing up, there is the Hinge Pad Holder with Pads, while for performing the project by hand, the Hand Pad Holder with Pads is the right tool. Once the floor has been treated with the Maintenance Oil, you can refresh localized wear spots with Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax and mop regularly with Osmo Wisch-Fix.

Wooden floor renovation costs
Renovating a wooden floor with Osmo does not have to be expensive. After all, no sanding is required. Do you have a room of approximately 50m2? Then you can renovate the entire floor for less than €170. Do you have a room of approximately 100m2? Then you can completely renovate a wooden floor for less than €225. These prices include Maintenance Oil, Intensive Cleaner, and tools for applying the cleaner and oil while standing.

By applying the Maintenance Oil to the wooden floor at the right time, time-consuming sanding jobs can be avoided. It is essentially applying a new layer without the need for sanding. The Maintenance Oil is also suitable for changing the gloss level of the surface. For example, if you have a wooden floor that has been treated with Hardwax Oil 3032 Silk Matte and you prefer a matte appearance, you can treat the floor with the Maintenance Oil Matte.

Repairing damage to a wooden floor

It is also possible to repair minor damage to a wooden floor. The Osmo Repair Paste is an oil and wax combination for repairing minor damage and scratches in wooden floors. The paste can be easily applied using a lint-free cloth, such as the Easy Pad Polishing Cloths. Always apply the Repair Paste along the grain of the wood and allow it to dry for 8 to 10 hours. If necessary, 2 to 3 coats of the Repair Paste can be applied.

Renovating holes in wooden floors The Osmo Wood Filler can be used to fill knots and cracks in a wooden floor. The Wood Filler is available in five different colors. The wood filler is easy to apply. After filling the holes and knots, the wood must be sanded. Finally, the floor can then be treated with, for example, Osmo Hardwax Oil.

Touching up wooden floors locally Is one plank in the wooden floor damaged? Or does this plank have stains that you can no longer remove with maintenance products? That is not a problem with Osmo. You can easily touch up floors treated with Osmo locally. If you want to restore or repair one or more planks, the planks must be sanded so that they can be treated again. To achieve the best possible result, the following eight steps must be followed:

Tape the damaged plank off from the rest of the wood.

Sand the surface evenly. The grit size of the sandpaper must correspond to that of the last sanding of the surrounding planks. First, sand the surface with grit 120 and check if this removes the damage or stains from the wood. If this is not the case, coarser sanding is recommended; always finish with grit 120. It is advisable to perform this with a hand sander. Thoroughly remove dust from the sanded area before treatment; this can be done with a vacuum cleaner or a dust cloth. Do not wet the sanded wood. Apply a thin layer to the wood using the Osmo Microfiber Roller. Do this with the same product used for the last layer, for example Hardwax Oil 3065 Semi-matte. If the damaged surface has only been sanded with 120 grit, it is recommended to apply this with a lint-free cotton cloth. This ensures you apply less product to the surface. Then buff this layer dry with another dry, lint-free cloth.

Allow the treated surface to dry for 8 to 10 hours.
After drying, apply another thin layer of Hardwax Oil using a lint-free cotton cloth. Then buff this layer dry with another dry lint-free cloth. Allow this layer to dry for 8 to 10 hours as well. Due to sanding, the natural wood color of the locally treated surface will usually be lighter than the rest of the wood. The wood color will even out over time.

Changing the color of a wooden floor Do you want to change the color of the floor? This is possible, but only by sanding the wood bare. Afterwards, the wooden floor can be treated in a color of your choice. To color the floor, you can use Hardwax Oil Farbig, Natural, or Oil Stain. We also sell test packs of all variants, allowing you to test the color on the sanded wood.

Osmo Hardwax Oil Farbig is ideal for the evenly colored protection of wooden stairs, such as oak, ash, and beech. Hardwax-Olie Farbig is a product based on natural oils and waxes; after treatment, it provides a protective surface. After treatment, it is harmless to humans, animals, and plants, just like all other Osmo products.

Osmo Hardwax-Olie Effect Natural 3041 creates an untreated look on light wood types, such as oak and spruce. When wood is sanded, it often has a lighter color than when it is treated. Osmo Hardwax-Olie 3041 was developed to preserve this light color. The product contains a small amount of white pigment. This ensures that when the wood is treated with Effect Natural, it does not darken in color.

Osmo Oil Stain is ideal for creating a (white) wash effect or an opaque effect. It is also possible to use other colors besides white, such as a grey wash. This Oil Stain can be used as a transparent or intensive color primer. Hardwax Wooden Floor Maintenance The products and techniques explained above are intended for wooden floors treated with Hardwax, Hardwax Oil, or oil. Hardwax Oil consists of a combination of oil and wax. The maintenance products are oil-based, making them highly suitable for treating floors that have been treated with oil-based products.
