Painting hardwood: here's how to do it sustainably and effectively

Painting hardwood requires a different approach than softwood. Discover how to properly prepare the wood and paint it durably.

What you need for this tutorial;

Do you want to paint hardwood, but doubt whether it is a good idea? Don't worry: with the right preparation and the right paint, you can protect and enhance even the densest hardwoods for a long time. In this article, you will discover the best way to paint wood such as bankirai, azobé, or meranti with Osmo Country House Paint. We explain how to prepare the wood, which products you need, and how to achieve the best results.

Preparation for treating hardwood

Proper preparation is essential for a sleek and long-lasting result. This not only improves paint adhesion but also extends the lifespan of the wood.

1. Clean the surface thoroughly
Always start with a good cleaning. Use Osmo Patio Cleaner to remove dirt, grease, and green deposits. Allow the wood to dry completely afterwards.

2. Is the wood greyed? Use Power-Gel
Treat greyed wood with Osmo Power-Gel Wood De-greaser to restore the original wood color and provide protection:

Apply with a soft brush

Let it sit for 20 minutes

Scrub and rinse thoroughly

Allow to dry for at least 24 hours

3. Weather new wood first
Is the wood new? Then leave it outside for 4 to 6 weeks. This removes natural oils and allows the paint to be absorbed better. Afterward, you can de-grey it if desired and treat it further.

4. Treated wood? Sand first

If the wood has been treated before (for example with oil or stain), you must first remove this by sanding:

40 grit to remove old layers

80 grit to level

120 grit for a smooth finish and optimal adhesion

Step-by-step plan: painting hardwood in 3 steps

Apply the first layer

Use a brush or roller and apply a thin layer of Osmo Country House Paint:

  • Work in the direction of the wood grain
  • Apply in thin coats for the best protection
  • Allow the first coat to dry for 10–12 hours
  • Do not paint in rain or high humidity
  • Treating indoors? Ensure good ventilation

Apply the second layer

Apply the second layer in the same way as the first. Let this layer dry for approximately 12 hours as well.

Let the wood harden

Allow the surface to dry for at least 24 hours after the second coat, without rain. This allows the paint to cure properly and prevents peeling.
