Painting a pine cabinet is a smart way to breathe new life into old furniture. Read how to properly prepare pine wood and ensure a sleek and durable end result.

What you need for this tutorial;
Do you want to paint an old pine cabinet so that it fits perfectly into your interior again? Good news: it is possible, and it doesn't have to be difficult at all. With the right preparation and supplies, you can give your cabinet a stylish makeover with a matte look or a beautiful opaque finish. In this article, we explain step by step how to paint your pine cabinet.
Preparation: ensure a good foundation
Good preparation determines the final result. Before you start painting your pine cabinet, it is important that the surface is clean and in good condition. This step-by-step plan is suitable for solid wood furniture, such as pine or spruce. Not suitable for furniture with a synthetic or laminated top layer.
1. Removing old layers
Is there still an old layer of paint or varnish on the cabinet? Then you must remove this first. You can do this with the Osmo Paint Stripper if you prefer not to sand, or you can choose to sand the cabinet.
Is your surface somewhat larger and do you still want to sand? Then use the following sequence for a nice, even surface:
- Start with grit 40 to remove old layers
- Continue with grit 80 to remove scratches
- Finish with grit 120 for a fine, smooth finish
2. Dust removal
Next, make the wood dust-free with a vacuum cleaner or a lint-free cloth. Do not forget the corners and grooves.

With Osmo Decorwas Creativ, you can give your pine cabinet a new look. Depending on your preferences, you can paint the cabinet with an opaque finish or create a transparent wash effect where the wood grain remains visible. In the step-by-step guide, we explain how to create an opaque effect.
Stir the product well
After opening the tin, it is important to mix the oil and wax well. Stir the Decorwas Creativ for at least 2 minutes.

Apply the first layer
Apply the first coat of Decorwas Creativ to the wood. Use a microfiber roller or brush for this.

Good after rolling
Ensure that the surface is thoroughly rolled or brushed over. This prevents too much product from remaining on the surface. Always work along the wood grain for a smooth result.

Correct any errors
You can correct mistakes such as brush hairs or roller marks up to 30 minutes after application, as long as the surface is wet. This ensures a beautiful, even finish.

Let the first layer dry thoroughly
Allow the cabinet to dry for 24 hours at a temperature of around 23°C. It will take longer in colder or more humid conditions. Ensure adequate ventilation during drying.

Apply the second coat
The surface must be finished with Hardwax-Oil Original Colorless. The Hardwax-Oil must be rolled thinly with the Osmo Microfiber Roller. Always do this along the wood grain. Carefully read the instructions for use of Osmo Hardwax-Oil Original before use.
