Treating a wooden floor: here's how to do it

Treating a wooden floor provides protection and enhances its appearance. Discover which treatment is suitable and how to keep your floor in top condition.

What you need for this tutorial;

Treating a wooden floor is the best way to protect your floor sustainably and preserve its natural look. Whether you choose a natural matte finish, a warm color, or a modern wet look—with Osmo, you create exactly the effect that suits your interior. In this article, we explain how to properly treat a wooden floor, which products you need, and how to keep the wood looking beautiful for years to come.

Preparation: here's how to start

Proper preparation is essential for a beautiful and durable end result. Depending on the current condition of your floor, three situations are possible:

Untreated floor
Is the floor still untreated? Then you can start oiling or waxing immediately. Sanding is usually not necessary, unless large splinters or damage are visible. In that case, sand with grit 120. Ensure the floor is clean and dry before you begin.

Previously oiled floor
If the floor has already been treated with wax, lacquer, or oil from another brand, the old layer must be removed first. Use a sanding machine with the following grits for this: Start with grit 40, then grit 80, and finish with grit 120.

Maintenance or applying a new layer
With the right Osmo products, you keep your floor and furniture looking beautiful. Liquid Maintenance Wax refreshes areas of wear and tear and cares for the wood without layer buildup. For a quick refresh, there is the Liquid Wax Refresher, which nourishes the wood with natural waxes. In case of heavy soiling, the Intensive Cleaner cleans thoroughly, after which you can immediately post-treat with Osmo Maintenance Oil – without scrubbing.

Step-by-step plan: treating a wooden floor

1

Choose the desired look

Determine in advance how you want your floor to look. Do you want to retain the original color, achieve a white wash effect, or perhaps a deep gloss? Osmo has a suitable combination for every wish:

Untreated look:

Apply one coat of Hardwax-Oil Effect Natural, followed by one coat of Hardwax-Oil Original (both with a roller). This preserves the untreated look on light wood types.

Wash effect:

Use one coat of Oil Stain (apply with Osmo pads or Osmo Easy Pads), followed by two coats of Hardwax-Oil Original (rolling). This creates a subtle color nuance focusing on the wood grain while preserving the wood structure.

Wet look:

Two coats of Hardwax-Oil Original (rolling) deepen the color in a gloss level of your choice.

Color accent:

One coat of Hardwax-Oil Farbig in the desired color, followed by one coat of Hardwax-Oil Original. Ideal for those who want to give their floor a uniform color.
