How do I stain my floor?
Staining a floor gives a wooden floor a beautiful appearance. With Osmo Floor Stain, you can create a wash effect, where the wood grain is colored in the desired shade. This product can also be used to create a more opaque effect on a wooden floor. Osmo calls this Oil Stain. Thanks to the oil, this product is very efficient and has a high coverage of up to 48 m² per liter; consequently, only a small amount of stain is needed to treat an entire wooden floor.
Benefits of Oil Stain
- Based on natural, plant-based oils and waxes
- High yield, 48 m²/l
- Attractive transparent colors
- Easy to maintain
- Protects against moisture and dirt
Floor stain colors
Osmo Floor Stain is available in the following 10 colors: White, Silver Grey, Graphite, Jatoba, Light Grey, Natural, Havana, Cognac, Tobacco, and Black. Polishing with one coat creates a wash effect, while polishing with two coats creates an opaque effect. With Osmo Floor Stain, you have endless possibilities when it comes to coloring a wooden floor.
Floor stain whitewash
To treat a floor with a whitewash, Osmo Oil Stain 3501 can be used. Applying a single coat of white floor stain 3501 creates a whitewash effect. With this treatment, the wood grain is colored white. After this treatment, it is recommended to finish it with Osmo Hardwax Oil Original. This ensures long-lasting protection for the wooden floor against moisture, dirt, and stains. After the complete treatment, it is not a problem if a glass of drink is accidentally spilled on the wooden floor.
In addition to a whitewash, wash effects in other colors can also be created with Osmo floor stain, such as a black wash, grey wash, or a brown wash effect. You can see examples below.
Floor stain gray
Opaque floor stain
By applying two coats of Osmo Floor Stain (Oil Stain) to bare sanded or new wood, an opaque effect is created on the wooden floor. After applying two coats of Floor Stain, it is recommended to apply one coat of Hardwax Oil Original. This ensures better protection against moisture, dirt, and stains.
Transparent Floor Stain
For a transparent coloring of the wood, you can apply one coat of Oil Stain to the floor. Applying a single coat ensures that it does not create an opaque effect. However, it is recommended to finish the floor with two coats of Hardwax Oil Original for proper protection. You can also apply only the colorless Hardwax Oil without the colored floor stain. This creates a wet-look effect, where the floor takes on a color as if it has been wetted.
Applying Floor Stain
1. Stir the Floor Stain well for 2 minutes. After opening the can, the Oil and Wax have separated. Always perform a test on the surface first to check if the result has the desired effect. The floor stain can only be applied to sanded-bare or new wooden floors.
2. Apply the first coat of Oil Stain to the new or sanded wood using a White Pad or a lint-free cloth.
3. Within 20 minutes, wipe away the excess product along the grain with the Fleece pad. Then dry-buff the Oil Stain with it.
4. Mistakes made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush hairs.
5. The drying time for the first coat is approximately 12 hours (at 23 degrees and 50% relative humidity). Drying takes longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Ensure proper ventilation at all times. Therefore, make sure windows and doors are open. 6. For an intensely colored effect: Repeat the “Light colored effect” process, applying a maximum of 2 color coats.
7. For both a “Light colored effect” and an “Intensely colored effect”, the surface must be finished with Hardwax-Oil Original Colorless. With 1 coat of Floor Stain, 2 coats of Hardwax Oil must be applied. With 2 coats of Floor Stain, 1 coat of Hardwax Oil is sufficient. The Hardwax Oil should be rolled on thinly with the Osmo Microfiber Roller and not buffed out. Always do this along the plank and wood grain.
8. The drying time for Hardwax-Oil Original Colorless is approximately 8-12 hours.
Application Tools
The Osmo Pads are the right tool for applying the Floor Stain. Use the white pad to apply the Floor Stain. Next, let the oil soak in for 20 minutes and buff the product dry with the Osmo Fleece pad. For small surfaces such as a table, Osmo Netherlands offers the Hand Pad Holder with Pads. For large surfaces such as a floor, we have the Hinged Pad Holder with Pads in our range. The Hinged Pad Holder can be attached to a telescopic pole, allowing the work to be performed while standing. The Hardwax Oil can be applied with an Osmo Microfiber roller.
