There are several ways to give a wooden floor color. In this article, we discuss the different options for a colored finish on a wooden floor. These colors are suitable for lighter wood species such as oak, spruce, beech and birch. A natural look, a transparent tint or an even color for your floor? Each Osmo product colors the floor in a different way, but which product is the right choice for you? Take a look at the different products and examples, make a test and treat the floor with the product of your choice.

Osmo Hardwax-Olie Effect (untreated look)

Hardwax-Olie Effect is a color product that actually makes sure the wood does not color too much. That may sound a little confusing. What Hardwax-Olie Effect 3041 Natural actually does is keep light wood species light after treatment. 3041 contains a very small amount of white pigment: just enough to keep the wood light, and so little that the white is practically invisible.

Application

Apply this product with a roller and make sure it is spread out very well. Because the white pigments are not visible, lap marks (build-ups of pigment) become visible very quickly.

Finishing

After the first coat of Hardwax-Olie Effect (to keep the wood light), we recommend applying the second coat with Hardwax-Olie Original. This brings out the grain a little more, giving the wood more character. There are two important reasons for a colorless top coat. A colorless top coat is easier to touch up without creating color differences, and it adds an extra layer before the color starts to wear.

Osmo Hardwax-Olie Farbig (even color)

Hardwax-Olie Farbig is a product that gives your wooden floor a more even, transparent color. Because this product is applied with a roller or a brush, the color pigments are spread over the entire floor. Hardwax-Olie Farbig is the proven Hardwax-Olie Original with a small amount of added pigment. Hardwax-Olie Farbig must always be applied as the first coat on bare wood.

Finishing

We then recommend applying the second and final coat with Hardwax-Olie Original, without sanding in between. There are two important reasons for a colorless top coat. A colorless top coat is easier to touch up without creating color differences, and it adds an extra layer before the color starts to wear.

Osmo Olie-Beits (wash effect)

Olie-Beits creates a pronounced color that mainly results in deep coloring in the grain, also known as a wash effect. Because Olie-Beits is applied with a cloth and rubbed in and buffed, the color settles mainly in the grain. The whole board takes on color, but rubbing and buffing leaves more color behind in the grain. Olie-Beits can also be applied twice, as described above, for a more intense color (right in the example).

Finishing

Because Olie-Beits is rubbed in and buffed, little product remains on the surface for protection, so it really only serves as a color layer. That is why we recommend finishing Olie-Beits with two coats of Hardwax-Olie Original for optimal protection and a longer lifespan. With two coats of Olie-Beits, only one coat of Hardwax-Olie Original is needed.
