What is a parquet floor?

A parquet floor consists of a top layer of wood; the layers underneath are often made of plywood. With solid wood, the entire plank consists of wood. This makes a parquet floor more affordable than a solid wood floor. A parquet floor is also known as engineered parquet. It is important to treat a parquet floor against moisture and dirt. This way, you maintain a beautiful parquet floor that is protected against wine, coffee, and water.

Supplies for treating a parquet floor

Oak parquet floor

Most parquet floors feature an oak top layer. Oak has the advantage of being suitable for treatment with Osmo. In addition to oak, other wood types can be chosen, such as pine or a tropical wood like Jatoba. While untreated oak gives a light appearance, Jatoba creates a warmer and classic reddish-brown tone with a dark grain.

Oiling a parquet floor with Hardwax Oil

An oak parquet floor can be treated with any Osmo interior product. You can create any look on oak wood. For instance, you can treat the wood with Hardwax-Oil Original. This colors the oak wood as if it has been wetted. With Hardwax-Oil Natural, you retain the light color of the oak; this product creates an untreated look. Additionally, there are other products to color the oak parquet floor, such as Osmo Hardwax-Oil Farbig and Oil Stain.

Tropical hardwoods are naturally oilier, which means these wood types are less able to absorb Osmo Hardwax-Oil evenly. Therefore, a special product has been developed for these wood types: Osmo Clear Wax. This product contains a lower wax content than Hardwax-Oil, allowing the Clear Wax to be absorbed better.

Protecting the parquet floor
A treatment with Osmo ensures that the parquet floor is protected against coffee, wine, and water. So, it is not a problem if a glass of drink accidentally spills on the parquet floor. In addition, the treatment can withstand heavy loads, making the products suitable for hospitality establishments as well. Another major advantage of Osmo is that the treatment can be touched up locally. As a result, the parquet floor does not need to be sanded if localized wear occurs, as is necessary with a lacquered parquet floor.

Parquet floor maintenance

Once a parquet floor has been oiled, it also needs to be maintained. A parquet floor treated with Osmo is easy to maintain. Maintenance ensures that the Hardwax Oil or Clear Wax lasts longer and provides better protection. With proper maintenance, you retain the desired appearance and protection for a long time; consequently, the treatment can last for more than 15 years.

Cleaning an Oiled Parquet Floor

The oiled parquet floor should be cleaned once a week. Osmo Wisch-Fix is the right product for this. This floor cleaner contains oil-based soaps and ensures that the treatment and the wood are nourished again. In addition, it cleans the parquet floor, even after a party or an accident involving spilled drinks.

In addition to cleaning, it is also recommended to treat the parquet floor twice a year with Osmo Liquid Maintenance Wax. This product is intended to refresh localized areas of wear. In these areas, part of the wax wears off; with the Liquid Maintenance Wax, these parts are nourished with wax again, ensuring the floor is well protected once more.

Cleaning a parquet floor

If a parquet floor has not been maintained for a long time, dirt may have penetrated the wood. In that case, it is advisable to clean the floor with Osmo Intensive Cleaner. This powerful cleaner removes all dirt that has accumulated over the years. You will really see a difference in the wood after cleaning. The dirt looks a bit black, and this settles into the parquet floor. After cleaning, the floor is clean again and can be treated with Osmo Maintenance Oil if necessary. The Maintenance Oil creates a new protective layer on the parquet floor.
