Painting hardwood: give your wood a new look
Painting hardwood is possible, provided it is properly prepared. Discover what to look out for to achieve a sleek and long-lasting result.

What you need for this tutorial;
Do you want to paint hardwood for a fresh look or better protection? Then it is important to know that painting hardwood works slightly differently than with softer wood types. Due to the high density and smooth structure, not all products adhere well. In this article, you will read how to achieve the best results – from preparation to finishing – using Osmo Country House Paint and Osmo Decor Wax Creativ, among others.
Preparation: the basis for a long-lasting finish
Hardwood requires careful preparation. A good start prevents layers from peeling or adhering poorly. Check what type of wood you have and follow the correct approach:
- New and untreated hardwood? Then you can start painting immediately. Sanding is not necessary in this case.
- Previously treated wood? First remove the old lacquer or paint layer with a paint stripper. If this is insufficient, the surface must be sanded bare.
Always use a brush or microfiber roller, depending on the surface and location. If you are working indoors, always choose a microfiber roller for a smooth result.
Is your wood greyed? Then first use Osmo Power-Gel Wood De-greaser. This restores the original color of the hardwood before you start painting.

Choose the right product for your application
Depending on the location and the type of surface, you can choose between two high-quality Osmo products:
Outdoor application: Use Osmo Country House Paint. This opaque oil- and wax-based wood paint leaves the wood grain visible and is ideal for fences, window frames, or cladding.
Indoor application: Choose Osmo Decor Wax Creative for furniture, panels, or doors. This is suitable for an intensive wash effect or a fully opaque result, depending on the application method. Always finish with Hardwax Oil Original for protection.

Apply the first layer
Stir the product well for 2 minutes: oil and wax have separated in the can.
Application varies by product:
Country House Paint: Apply a thin layer with a brush or microfiber roller. Work along the wood grain.
Decor Wax Creativ: Apply to new or sanded wood with an Osmo White Pad, and buff the product dry within 20 minutes with an Osmo Fleece Pad. Always work along the wood grain. When you want to achieve an opaque effect.
For all products: test the effect beforehand on an inconspicuous spot with a sample.

Let the layer dry thoroughly
Country house paint: Drying time approximately 10–12 hours with good ventilation.
Decorwax Creativ: Allow to dry for 24 hours at approx. 23°C and 50% humidity. Open windows and doors for good ventilation.
Note: Application errors can be corrected on wet product for up to 30 minutes (e.g., brush hairs or application streaks).

Apply the second coat + finishing
- Country House Paint: Apply a second coat in the same way as the first.
Decor Wax Creativ:
- For a wash effect: Finish with 2 thin coats of Hardwax Oil Original, applied with a microfiber roller.
- For an opaque effect: First apply a second coat of Decor Wax (do not buff out), then 1 coat of Hardwax Oil Original as a finish.
- Allow the Hardwax Oil to dry for 8–12 hours. Afterward, the surface is wear-resistant, dirt-repellent, and moisture-resistant.
Note: used cloths can cause spontaneous combustion. Always rinse them with water before disposing of them.
