Products for treating a wooden pergola

Which wood is suitable for a pergola?

Most wooden pergolas are made of Douglas fir, larch or bankirai. In fact, the wood species does not really matter for a pergola. What matters most is that the wood is treated properly, so that it stays in top condition.

Wooden pergola with plants

A wooden pergola is very well suited for growing climbing plants. The climbers can wind around both the vertical and horizontal parts, giving the pergola a beautiful green look. The plants not only bring more greenery into the garden, they can also create more shade. Unfortunately, there are no climbing plants that flower all year round in all kinds of beautiful colors. There are, however, climbers that stay green all year, such as ivy or evergreen honeysuckle.

Wooden pergola as a canopy

Besides a green look, a pergola can also provide plenty of shade in the garden. The shade makes it pleasant to sit outside, even at the hottest moments of the day. Wooden pergolas are often used as a patio cover. Apart from the pergola itself, all you need is a cloth to provide the shade. These shade sails are often easy to install yourself and to take down again when the weather turns.

Pergola in black wood

Wood is rarely black by nature, but you can of course make it black. Douglas fir and other wood species can be treated perfectly well with Osmo Landhuisverf 9005 Zwart. This product gives the wood an opaque black finish. The advantage of this product over paint is that Landhuisverf also protects against moisture and dirt, and it does not flake or crack.

Treating a pergola

You can treat pergola wood with various products. But if you are looking for a quality product that protects against UV rays, moisture and dirt, and that you do not have to reapply every year, take a look at the Osmo products.

Treating a Douglas fir canopy

Canopies made of Douglas fir, for example, can also be treated with UV-Beschermingsolie. This creates a protective surface that extends the lifespan of the wood. For Douglas fir, UV-Beschermingsolie 427 Douglas is a beautiful color. You can finish it with UV-Beschermingsolie 420 Kleurloos: together, these two products give Douglas fir an untreated look. UV-Beschermingsolie for a wooden pergola

Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie is extremely well suited for treating wooden pergolas. After treatment, the wood is protected against:

  • UV rays: graying is significantly delayed, with UV protection factor 12.
  • Moisture: the treatment is water-repellent, so moisture penetrates the wood far less easily.
  • Dirt and green algae: the protective layer makes the wood easier to keep clean.

Step-by-step plan: treating a wooden pergola with UV-Beschermingsolie

With this step-by-step plan, you treat your wooden pergola the right way and protect the wood against sun, moisture and graying for years.

1

Check and clean the wood

Make sure the pergola is clean, dry and free of dirt, green algae and dust.
Has the wood already turned gray? Then clean it first with a suitable graying remover before you start the treatment.

30 to 60 minutes
2

Choose the right UV-Beschermingsolie

Decide whether you want a colorless version or a color that gives the wood a natural shade, such as Douglas or Lariks.
For Douglas fir, for example, you can start with color 427 Douglas and finish with 420 Kleurloos for an untreated look.

3

Stir the product well

Stir the UV-Beschermingsolie thoroughly so that the pigments are evenly distributed.
This prevents color differences during application.

4

Apply the first coat

Use a brush or microfiber roller and work in the direction of the wood grain.
Treat all vertical parts evenly and avoid drips.

30 to 60 minutes
5

Let it dry

Let the first coat dry thoroughly before you continue.
Check the packaging for the exact drying time.

8 to 12 hours
6

Apply the second coat

Repeat the application for optimal protection against UV radiation, moisture and dirt.
After this coat, the wood is protected for a long time.

30 to 60 minutes
7

Easy maintenance in the future

After a few years, depending on the weather and location, all you need to do is clean the wood and apply a new coat of oil.
Sanding is usually not necessary.

Applying Osmo oil

The product is easy to apply to the wood with a brush or a microfiber roller. Apply two coats of the oil and the wood is very well protected. The treatment lasts about 3 to 6 years, depending heavily on the weather. The advantage of Osmo is that applying a new coat is very easy. All you have to do is clean the wood and apply a new coat of the oil. After the new treatment, the wood looks as good as before.

UV-Beschermingsolie variants

UV-Beschermingsolie is available in different colors. All of these variants protect against UV rays, even the colorless version (420). The colored variants all have a color name named after a wood species, such as Douglas and Lariks. However, this does not mean that the Douglas variant may only be applied to Douglas fir. You can choose whichever color you like best. Because we have various products in our range, it is always wise to test in advance which color you like best. We have testers of all base treatments in our range. You can order them via the products below.
