What you need for this tutorial;

Bankirai wood is known for its robust and durable properties, but this wood species also needs the right protection. In this article, you will learn how to stain bankirai wood with Osmo products to preserve its natural appearance and lifespan. Follow the step-by-step plan below and discover handy maintenance tips.

Preparing bankirai wood

How you prepare bankirai depends on the current condition of the wood. Bankirai is, after all, a very durable wood species. It is important to start well prepared to achieve the best result. We also recommend always doing a color test before you start the treatment. You can order a sample for this. This helps you make sure the look is what you want and that the Osmo treatment adheres well to the wood.

  1. Sanding (after a previous treatment with stain or paint)
If the wood has been treated before, you need to sand it to remove old residues. Use sandpaper in the following grit order: 40, 80 and 120.
Has the wood been oiled? Then do a test first. In most cases, a new Osmo treatment will adhere well to existing oil.
  2. Untreated wood
Untreated bankirai can be treated directly with the oil or stain of your choice. Make sure the surface is clean and dry.
  3. Wood that has grayed or become dirty through weathering
Has the wood turned gray or become dirty due to the weather? Then use Osmo Power-Gel Houtontgrijzer to bring back the original color. Apply the graying remover, let it work, and clean the wood thoroughly by scrubbing with water. Once the wood is dry, you can start the treatment.

Step-by-step plan: staining bankirai

Staining bankirai correctly protects it against the weather, dirt and moisture. Follow these steps for the best result.

1

Clean the surface

Make sure the wood is clean and dry. First remove dirt, dust and algae from the surface. Use a stiff brush and Osmo Terrasreiniger for this. Preferably work on a dry day without rain, at a temperature between 10°C and 25°C.

Choose the stain

For the best protection, use:

  • Osmo Terras-Olie in the color bankirai for horizontal wooden parts (such as decks and decking).
  • Osmo Natuurlijke Olie-Beits for vertical wooden parts (such as fences and facades).

These products protect against UV radiation and keep the wood water-repellent.

Apply the stain

  • Stir the can for a few minutes.
  • Apply a thin, even coat with a brush or roller so that it penetrates the wood well. Work in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Let the first coat dry for 12 to 24 hours. Make sure the wood does not get wet while it dries.
  • Apply a second coat to fully saturate the wood and ensure optimal protection.

Optional: anti-slip treatment

Want extra grip on your deck or decking? Then apply a third coat of Osmo Anti-Slip Terras-Olie after the two coats of Terras-Olie.

Let it dry

After applying the final coat, the wood must dry sufficiently. Avoid contact with water and/or other liquids during this period.

Benefits of Osmo bankirai stain

  • Water- and dirt-repellent: ideal for outdoor use.
  • UV protection: delays graying of your wood.
  • No sanding needed: treated surfaces do not need to be sanded again for a maintenance coat.
  • Environmentally friendly: based on natural oils and waxes.
  • Deep penetration: nourishes the wood and helps reduce warping.

Tips for a perfect result

  • Osmo should be applied as thinly as possible. A coat that is too thick prevents the wood from absorbing the oil properly, which can lead to poor adhesion.
  • Test the color on a small piece of wood beforehand to check that Osmo adheres well to the surface and that the look is what you want.

Follow-up treatment

Check every year whether your bankirai wood is still sufficiently protected. With surfaces treated with Osmo, you do not need to sand before applying a new coat when the finish shows wear. First clean the wood with Osmo Terrasreiniger and then apply a new coat of oil or stain.

Maintenance advice

To keep your bankirai wood in top condition, we recommend regular maintenance:

Cleaning: remove dirt and algae with Osmo Terrasreiniger, preferably twice a year (spring and autumn).

Inspection: check every year whether the protective layer is still intact. If necessary, treat again with the appropriate Osmo oil to prevent wear.

Safety: prevent slipperiness by cleaning your deck regularly, especially after damp periods.
