Supplies for painting a wooden floor
Painting a wooden floor: which product is suitable?
Whether you are looking for a clear product to apply a fresh coat or for a completely new color, choosing the right product is very important. Choose Osmo Decorwas Creativ or Olie-Beits and you will enjoy a beautiful color for a long time. Both products are a combination of oil and wax, so you can safely apply them to your wooden floor. Create a wash effect in which mainly the grain of the wood is colored, or go for full coverage (Decorwas Creativ). We offer a wide range of colors for painting your wooden floor.
Sanding and painting a wooden floor
Has your wooden floor previously been treated with another product, such as varnish? Then it is advisable to sand the floor down to bare wood before you start painting. Why? Sanding is important because it affects the end result. After sanding, the contact surface on which the product is applied is larger. This helps the product adhere better to the floor, so you will enjoy the new color for longer. Osmo products are based on natural oils and waxes and need to be able to bond with the wood. A floor sanding machine is ideal for sanding a floor. Start with grit 40, continue with grit 80 and finish with grit 120.
How to paint a wooden floor
Stir the floor paint well for 2 minutes, because the oil and wax may have separated in the can. Always do a test on the surface first to see whether the result has the effect you want.
First coat
Apply the first coat of Decorwas Creativ to the new or sanded wood and then buff it out with a white pad. You can use the Osmo hinged pad holder with a white pad for this. It can be attached to the Osmo telescopic handle.
Buff dry
Within 20 minutes, buff the Decorwas Creativ dry with the Osmo fleece pad. This makes sure not too much product is left on the floor and that it dries evenly. Always buff the product dry along the boards and in the direction of the grain. This gives an even look.
Drying
The first coat takes about 24 hours to dry (at 23 °C / 73 °F and 50% relative humidity). At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Always make sure there is good ventilation, for example by opening windows and doors.
Second coat
Apply the second coat of Decorwas Creativ with a microfiber roller or brush, and do not buff this coat out. Always apply the product along the boards and in the direction of the grain. This coat creates the opaque effect.
Protection
For optimal protection, apply one more coat of Hardwax-Olie Original. Apply this coat with a microfiber roller or brush in the direction of the grain and along the boards.
Drying
Hardwax-Olie Original takes about 12 hours to dry.
Wooden floor paint colors
Painting a wooden floor white
Would you like to paint your wooden floor a lighter color? Then you can choose Decorwas Creativ 3188 Sneeuw or 3186 Wit mat with a matte finish. For an even end result, apply two coats of Decorwas Creativ: buff in the first coat and roll on the second. This creates an opaque white effect. Then finish the floor with a protective coat of Hardwax-Olie Original. This product is transparent, so it does not change the color. Apply it to the entire floor and you will enjoy your new white floor for a long time, because Hardwax-Olie protects against moisture, dirt and stains.
Painting a wooden floor in grey wash
Grey wash is a good option for giving your floor a new look. With a wash effect, mainly the grain of the wood is colored. Painting a wooden floor in grey wash gives it a subtle gray look. Grey wash is perfect if you do not want a fully opaque gray floor, but would like to give it a different tint. Read the instructions carefully when you buy the product, so you know exactly how to work for the best result. Choose Olie-Beits 3512 Zilvergrijs, 3514 Grafiet or 3518 Licht grijs, or go for a subtle gray floor with Decorwas Creativ 3181 Kiezel. For a gray wooden floor, too, a top coat of Hardwax-Olie keeps the result looking good for longer. Prefer a more intense gray? Then apply Olie-Beits in two coats: the color becomes more intense, but not fully opaque.
Applying a protective coat
Finished painting your wooden floor in color? A clear finish works perfectly and keeps the color looking good. The Osmo protective coat makes sure your wooden floor can take a knock. After applying this product, the floor is resistant to water, coffee and wine, so it is optimally protected once the oil has been applied. After about 12 hours the floor is dry again. Do make sure you ventilate well so the product can dry properly. Hardwax-Olie Original is available in different sheen levels: glossy, silk matte, semi-matte and matte.
Do you have some Hardwax-Olie left over after painting your wooden floor? Then you can also use it to treat other large wooden surfaces indoors, such as a wall or ceiling. For tables and furniture we recommend Osmo TopOil. Always make sure the wood is sanded bare or untreated, and always do a small test first to see whether you like the look.
Testing
Choosing a new color for painting a wooden floor can be a difficult decision. To make it easier, Osmo Nederland keeps sample packs of every color in stock. Each sachet contains 5 ml, which lets you test an area of about 20 x 30 cm (8 x 12 in). After testing, it is easier to choose which color looks best on your wooden floor.
