Supplies for painting an interior frame
Before you start: supplies and preparation
Before you pick up the brush, it is useful to gather everything you need. Choose a paint that suits your type of wood and the look you want.
Supplies
Preparing a frame
Good preparation is half the work. Before you can start painting, the frame may need to be prepared first. Are you working with a new, clean and untreated frame? Then you can usually get started right away. If the frame still has an old layer of varnish or paint, or has a lot of stains or scratches, you will first have to sand the frame down to bare wood. It is wise to sand in three different passes. Start sanding with 40 grit sandpaper, continue with 80 grit and finish with 120 grit. After this, the frame should be bare and even, so that the new layer of paint can adhere well to the wood. Make sure you wear gloves, a dust mask and safety glasses while sanding. After sanding, make the frame dust-free with Osmo Easy Pads. Then apply a base coat of Osmo Houtbeschermer and let it dry before you start painting with Decorwas Creativ.
It is useful to tape off a few things in advance. Tape off everything that must not get paint on it, for example the window, the windowsill or the wall. Make sure you use glass tape for taping off the window, as it is easy to remove from the glass without leaving adhesive residue. Preferably do not paint when it is raining or about to rain.
Step-by-step plan for painting an interior frame
Are you ready to get started? We are happy to help you on your way with a step-by-step plan.
Stir the can
Stir the can of Decorwas Creativ thoroughly with the stirring stick for about a minute. This distributes the ingredients and pigments throughout the product.
Apply the first coat
Start by painting the edges next to the window. Use the brush for this. Apply a thin coat and work in the direction of the wood grain as much as possible. Work from the inside out.
Brush over again
Go over the frame again with an almost dry brush, using light pressure. This allows you to distribute the product evenly and remove any brush start marks.
Let the coat dry
Let the frame dry for at least 24 hours. Ensure good ventilation and a temperature of around 20 degrees.
Apply the second coat
Apply a second coat, see steps 2 to 4.
Choose the right paint
Your main reason for painting your wooden frame is probably the look. But of course it is important that the new look also offers sufficient protection for the wood. Your choice of paint is more important for this than you might think. A standard paint based on latex or solvents gives the wood a protective layer of color. However, over the years this layer can crack or peel. For a surface such as a frame, which is touched a lot and is exposed daily to moisture, air, light and changes in humidity, you may want a more durable solution.
That is why an oil-based paint, such as Osmo Decorwas Creativ, is a better choice. This paint not only offers optimal color coverage, it also penetrates deep into the wood, protecting it from within against moisture, dirt and damage. The result is a colorfast layer that does not crack or peel, while the natural wood structure and grain remain visible. An interior frame treated with Osmo is optimally protected, keeps its authentic wooden look and feels natural.

Maintaining your interior frame
Now that you have completely refreshed the frame, you naturally want to keep it looking good for as long as possible. To keep the frame in optimal condition for as long as possible, it is important to maintain it regularly. For example, make sure you clean the frame thoroughly once every week or two. You can do this with a solution of all-purpose cleaner, but if you really want to clean the frame properly, it is better to use Osmo Spray-Cleaner. This cleaning spray contains a small amount of wax that nourishes the finish while cleaning. As a result, the frame will last a lot longer.
Does the frame show signs of wear, such as scratches or bare spots? Then you can easily refresh the frame with Osmo Vloeibare Onderhoudswas.
