Treating and protecting wooden garden furniture

This page explains how to make wooden garden furniture look beautiful again and protect it with Osmo products: first clean it and remove the graying with Osmo Power-Gel, then treat it with Osmo Natuurlijke Olie-Beits, Osmo Terras-Olie or Osmo Landhuisverf. This keeps the wood looking good for longer and protected against moisture and UV radiation, and you can use testers beforehand to choose the right color and look.

How to keep your wooden garden furniture beautiful and protected

Wooden garden furniture that you buy online or in a store has often already been treated with an oil or stain. In the store the wood looks beautiful, and of course you want to keep it that way. After the furniture has been outside in the garden for a while, you discover that the wood was not treated that well after all. The wood turns gray and its color fades. Moisture also gets into the wood, which does not make it look any better. To bring back the beautiful color and protect the wood against moisture, dirt and graying, we recommend treating it with Osmo oil.

Removing graying and cleaning garden furniture

Before the garden furniture can be treated again with an oil or stain, it is important to clean the wood first. You can do this with Osmo Power-Gel. This product not only cleans the wood, it also removes the gray. This means the original color of the wood comes back. Do you have untreated garden furniture? Then you can also use Power-Gel to clean it and remove the graying.

If you apply Osmo oil directly to the wood without cleaning it and removing the graying first, the gray color stays trapped under the oil. So for a beautiful end result, we advise cleaning the wood with Power-Gel first.

How to use Osmo Power-Gel

Power-Gel is easy to use. Apply the gel to the wood with a brush and scrub it with a stiff brush after about 20 minutes. After scrubbing, rinse the wood with clean water, not with a pressure washer. After cleaning, let the wood dry for at least 48 hours so it is dry enough to be treated.

Treating garden furniture with oil or stain?

Now that the furniture is clean, you still need to choose which product to treat the wood with: an oil or a stain? Both are available in the Osmo range. For garden furniture we recommend Natuurlijke Olie-Beits first and foremost, or otherwise Terras-Olie. If you want a silver-gray look, choose Vergrijzingsbeits.

Traditional stains are water-based, but that is not the case with Osmo. Osmo stain is also oil-based. This means the treatment lasts a long time, does not crack or peel and protects against moisture and dirt.

What is the difference between Terras-Olie and Natuurlijke Olie-Beits?
Osmo Terras-Olie is available in 9 different colors and 1 clear version. This oil colors the wood strongly toward the color of the oil. Terras-Olie is not an opaque oil, so you will always see the wood structure and grain. In addition, the colored versions offer protection against UV radiation, so the wood turns gray less quickly.

With a treatment of Natuurlijke Olie-Beits, you see more of the natural wood color than with Terras-Olie. This product colors the wood less strongly, and here too you keep seeing the wood structure and grain. In terms of protection, both oils offer the same quality. After treatment, the wood is protected against UV radiation, moisture and dirt.

Treating garden furniture with opaque paint
Would you like to treat the furniture with an opaque paint? Then take a look at Osmo Landhuisverf. This opaque paint is an oil-based product, so it also offers protection against moisture and UV radiation. After treatment with Landhuisverf you no longer see the wood grain, but the wood structure is still visible.

Testing garden furniture oil
Not sure yet which oil or stain you want to apply to your furniture? Then order a few sample packs. These testers contain 5 ml and give a good impression of the treatment. You can, for example, do the test on the underside of a garden table.

Step-by-step plan: cleaning, restoring and treating wooden garden furniture

With this step-by-step plan you give your garden furniture its color back and protect the wood against moisture and graying for a long time with Osmo products.

1

Check the condition of the wood

If the wood has turned gray, dull or dirty, it must be cleaned and the graying removed first.
Never apply oil directly over a gray surface.

2

Let the wood dry thoroughly

After removing the graying, let the garden furniture dry for at least 48 hours.
The wood must be completely dry before you continue with the treatment.

24 to 48 hours
3

Choose the right finish

Preferably choose Natuurlijke Olie-Beits, which subtly preserves the wood color.
If you want to color the wood more strongly, you can also use Terras-Olie.
For a silver-gray look, choose Vergrijzingsbeits.
For an opaque finish, you can use Landhuisverf.

4

Stir the product well

Stir the oil or stain carefully so that the pigments are evenly distributed.

5

Apply the first coat

Use a brush and work in the direction of the wood grain.
Make sure the coat is thin and even.

6

Let it dry and apply a second coat

Let the coat dry according to the instructions (about 12 hours) and apply a second coat if needed.
Afterwards, the wood is protected against UV radiation, moisture and dirt.

7

Test the color first

Not sure about the right color or finish? Then use testers.
Test them in an inconspicuous spot, such as the underside of the table.
