Painting hardwood outdoors: Handy tips & step-by-step plan

Painting hardwood outdoors requires the right preparation and products. Discover how to paint hardwood sustainably without peeling or cracking.

What you need for this tutorial;

Do you want to paint hardwood outdoors? Then it is important to use a paint suitable for high-density wood. Treating hardwood requires a different approach than treating softer wood types. In this article, you will discover how to treat outdoor wood, such as a hardwood fence, decking, stairs, or garden furniture, with Osmo Country House Paint. This ensures a beautiful appearance as well as long-lasting protection against UV radiation, rain, and dirt.

Preparation: indispensable when treating hardwood

Proper preparation is crucial for a sleek and durable end result. Follow these steps before you start painting outdoor hardwood:

  • Untreated wood? Allow the wood to acclimatize for 4 to 6 weeks first. Once the wood has turned gray, this graying can be removed. If there is no graying, you can start painting immediately. Sanding is not necessary for hardwood, as long as the surface is clean and dry.
  • Already painted or varnished wood? Sand the surface bare using 40-80-120 grit sandpaper.
  • Maintained or treated wood? Clean the surface thoroughly with Osmo Patio Cleaner and then start painting immediately.
  • Has your hardwood turned gray due to weather and UV radiation? Then use Osmo Power-Gel Wood De-grayer first. This brings out the original wood color. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly afterwards (at least 24 hours) before proceeding. Please note: for new exterior wood, it is wise to let it weather for 4–6 weeks first. This allows the paint to adhere better and prevents long-term problems.

Step-by-step plan: painting hardwood in 4 steps

Whether you are staining hardwood decking boards, treating hardwood posts, or staining hardwood black: this step-by-step plan ensures a strong, beautiful finish.

1

Choose the right exterior paint

For all exterior projects, Osmo Country House Paint is the best paint. This oil and wax-based stain is perfectly suited for hardwood thanks to its good adhesion and high protective value. The paint penetrates the wood, does not completely seal it, and prevents the layer from peeling or cracking.

Apply the first layer

Stir the Osmo Country House Paint thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Then, use a block brush or exterior brush to apply a thin layer in the direction of the wood grain. A thin layer ensures an even result and prevents paint from peeling.

Lacquering is often discouraged for exterior wood because it peels more easily. Therefore, it is preferable to use an oil-based stain, such as Osmo Country House Paint.

Tip: You can touch up mistakes such as brush strokes or hairs within 15 minutes of application.

Let dry

Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 10 to 12 hours at a temperature between 10 and 25 degrees. Pay close attention to the weather: rain or high humidity slow down drying. Therefore, never paint during wet weather conditions.

Apply the second coat

Apply a second thin coat in the same way. This second coat ensures full coverage, the strongest protection, and a beautiful, even finish.
