Hardwood is known for its durability and natural look, but even this strong type of wood needs protection. Applying stain correctly keeps your hardwood surfaces resistant to moisture, dirt and the weather. In this article, we explain step by step how to stain hardwood and how to get the best result.

Preparation before staining hardwood

Good preparation is crucial for the stain to adhere well and provide optimal protection. Take the condition of your hardwood into account and do a color test with an Osmo sample beforehand. That way you can be sure the chosen stain gives the look you want.

  1. Sanding (for older coats of paint or stain)
Sand the surface thoroughly with sandpaper in the grit order 40, 80 and 120 to remove old primer, varnish or any other finish. Then do a test to check the adhesion of the new stain.
  2. Untreated hardwood
Untreated wood can be treated right away. Make sure the wood is clean and dry before you start, because untreated hardwood absorbs the first coat of stain more quickly.
  3. Grayed or dirty hardwood
If the wood has turned gray due to the weather, use Osmo Power-Gel to bring back the original color. Then clean the wood thoroughly and let it dry before applying the stain.

Step-by-step plan: staining hardwood

Follow these steps to properly protect all your hardwood items, such as your hardwood fence, deck or garden furniture.

1

Clean the surface

Use the Osmo patio brush or another stiff brush to remove dirt and dust. For a thorough clean of, for example, impregnated wood or a hardwood deck, you can use Osmo Terrasreiniger. Preferably work on a dry day with temperatures between 10 °C and 25 °C.

Choose the right stain

Choose the right treatment for hardwood depending on the result you want:

Color option (with pigment): use Osmo Natuurlijke Olie-Beits if you want to apply a pigmented color for extra protection.

  • Colorless for a deeper look: choose Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie to preserve the natural look and slow down graying on vertical parts.

Treatment for horizontal parts: use Osmo Terras-Olie for optimal protection of horizontal surfaces such as decks and terraces.

These products offer long-lasting protection against the weather and keep the wood grain visible.

Apply the first coat of stain

  • Shake or stir the stain thoroughly.
  • Use a brush or roller to apply a thin, even coat. Always work in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Let the first coat dry thoroughly, usually between 12 and 24 hours. Protect the surface from moisture while it dries.

Avoid contact with water or other liquids until the stain has fully cured. Check for any drips or blotches and remove them if necessary.

Easy maintenance: the surface does not need to be sanded when applying a new coat.

Tips for the best result
