Staining spruce wood: protection and appearance for indoors and outdoors
Staining spruce wood extends its lifespan and improves its appearance. Read how to do it properly.

What you need for this tutorial;
Spruce is a widely used wood species for furniture, fences and structures, both indoors and outdoors. Because spruce absorbs moisture more quickly, it can move or warp. By staining spruce wood, you provide better protection against moisture and wood rot, while keeping the wood grain beautifully visible.
Want to stain spruce wood and extend its lifespan? Then follow this step-by-step plan to stain your wood properly and choose the right look.
Preparation before staining spruce wood
Good preparation ensures a longer lifespan and a beautiful finish.
- 1. Sanding spruce wood
Impregnated wood, or a finish other than oil, such as old layers of paint? Use coarser sandpaper (40/80/120 grit) to prepare the surface. - Has the wood been oiled before? Do a quick test to see whether sanding is necessary.
2. Untreated spruce wood
Is the spruce wood untreated? Then you can start staining right away.
3. Cleaning grayed or dirty wood
Use Osmo Power-Gel Houtontgrijzer to remove dirt and/or graying before you apply the stain.
👉 Tip: Order a sample of the stain and test in advance how the color turns out on your wood.
