Treating a teak table

Teak tables are very popular and can be used both indoors and outdoors. Teak is a hardwood and therefore very suitable for furniture and floors. To help you enjoy your teak table for longer, we describe how these tables can be treated and maintained. A treated teak table lasts for years without the wood suffering from rings and stains. That makes this treatment very suitable for a teak table.

Benefits of TopOil

  • Based on natural, plant-based oils and waxes
  • High yield: 1 liter treats 24 m2
  • Water-repellent and hard-wearing
  • Resistant to household chemicals and stains

Which product to use for an indoor teak table?

Osmo TopOil is the right product for treating a teak table indoors. The clear version of TopOil makes the teak look as if it has been wetted, so it becomes slightly darker. The figure and grain of the wood also stand out more and become more visible. The colored versions tint the wood toward the color of the TopOil. However, the white versions (3037 Wit and 3068 Natural) are not suitable for this wood species. When applied to teak, they create a white haze, which is not the intention.

To find out how TopOil will color your teak table, you can do a test on the underside of the table. That way you will never be faced with surprises. This also lets you test the adhesion and protection of the product.

TopOil is an oil and wax based product. After treatment, the table is protected against moisture and dirt. So it is no problem if a drink is spilled on the teak table. The natural ingredients of the product are safflower oil, soybean oil, linseed oil and sunflower oil; the wax is made from carnauba wax.

How do you treat a teak table?

If the table is untreated and there are no stains in the wood, you can start the treatment right away. If the table has already been treated with a product, it is wise to sand that finish off the table, always finishing with 120 grit. Especially in the case of a varnish or wax product, TopOil cannot be applied over it. If the table has been oiled, you could do a test with TopOil to see whether it adheres to the existing finish.

On teak, TopOil is preferably applied by buffing, in 3 to 4 thin coats. On a large tabletop, two very thin coats can also be rolled or brushed on. Always buff in the direction of the grain. You can buff with Osmo Pads or with a lint-free cloth. The video at the bottom of the page shows how to apply TopOil.

Maintaining an indoor teak table

Thanks to Osmo Spray-Cleaner, the teak table is easy to clean. The product contains soap based on natural oils. If the table shows light signs of wear, you can apply Osmo Vloeibare Onderhoudswas. This product comes in spray form, which makes it easier to apply. Spray the Onderhoudswas onto the wood and buff it into the worn areas with a lint-free cloth. Then let the Onderhoudswas dry for 40 minutes. After this maintenance, the table will look good again.

Teak maintenance: re-treating
After years of use, the table may show wear and scratches that can no longer be repaired with Vloeibare Onderhoudswas. You can then lightly sand the table with 120 grit and apply a new coat of TopOil. Rolling or brushing? Then one new coat is enough. When buffing, we recommend applying at least 2 coats to the sanded wood.

Treating a teak table with green soap
We do not recommend treating teak tables with green soap. Green soap leaves a greasy layer that can prevent stains. However, the table then has to be treated with green soap every week. This is very labor-intensive and will never protect as well as Osmo treatments.
