For oak indoors, use Osmo Hardwax-Olie or Osmo TopOil. Both soak into the wood instead of sitting on top as a layer of lacquer, so oak can keep moving and you can touch up the surface locally without sanding the whole floor or table.
Which oil for which oak surface
For an oak floor, Hardwax-Olie Original is the standard: hard-wearing, water-resistant and easy to maintain. For an oak table, worktop or kitchen countertop, choose TopOil, which is designed for surfaces that come into frequent contact with food and moisture. On oak stairs, use Hardwax-Olie Anti-Slip for extra grip.
Clear, white wash or dark
A clear hardwax oil gives oak a deepened, wet look. If the wood should stay light, use Hardwax-Olie Effect Natural 3041, with white pigment that counteracts yellowing. For a white wash or a grey tint, first apply Decorwas Transparant and finish with a clear hardwax oil. For a deeper colour, use Hardwax-Olie Farbig.
Oak and tannin: preventing dark stains
Oak contains tannins. In contact with water and metal, for example steel wool or a wet plant pot, this can cause dark stains. A well-sealed layer of oil limits that risk, because moisture is slower to soak into the wood. So always apply two coats and pay extra attention to the end grain.
Maintaining oiled oak
