For smoked oak indoors, use Osmo Hardwax-Olie Original on floors and Osmo TopOil on tables and furniture, both clear. An oil penetrates the wood and preserves the warm, dark tone created by smoking.
Which oil for which surface
Treat a smoked oak floor with two thin coats of Hardwax-Olie Original. For a table or sideboard, choose TopOil, which is resistant to coffee, wine and water and food-safe. Both can be touched up locally, so a scratch does not mean sanding the whole surface.
No matt or white products on dark wood
On dark wood, a fully matt oil can leave a light, white haze. So choose 3032 satin matt or 3065 semi-matt instead of 3062 matt, and for TopOil choose 3028 satin matt. Products with white pigment, such as Hardwax-Olie Effect Natural 3041, are intended for light wood species and not for smoked oak.
Sand with care
During smoking, the tannins in the oak react with ammonia, which darkens the wood. That colour is strongest in the top layer of the wood. So sand lightly and evenly, otherwise lighter patches can appear. If you want to make the wood even darker, Hardwax-Olie Farbig in 3074 Grafiet or 3075 Zwart gives an even colour. Maintaining oiled smoked oak
Mop the floor with Wisch-Fix and refresh worn patches with the Vloeibare Onderhoudswas. Keep tables and furniture clean with the Spray-Cleaner. This keeps the deep tone of the wood even.
