Finish for ayous outdoors
Finish ayous outdoors with Osmo Landhuisverf or Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie. Ayous is a light, soft wood species that is naturally not very resistant to weather and moisture outdoors. This is exactly where the finish makes the difference, so choose a product that seals the wood well against sun and rain.
Opaque with Landhuisverf
Landhuisverf is an opaque oil-based paint for exterior wood, such as facades, sheds, shutters and fences. The paint covers the colour, but the wood structure stays visible. It does not flake or crack, and you can touch it up without sanding, straight over the old coat. There are 21 colours, which you can also mix with each other. Also see shutters and shed.
Transparent with UV-Beschermingsolie
If you want to see the light wood structure, choose UV-Beschermingsolie for vertical wood. Apply two coats: first a coloured coat followed by a coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. The colour 429 Natural keeps light wood light. UV-Beschermingsolie is not suitable for horizontal wood such as a terrace.
Sawn edges and preparation
Also treat the sawn edges and the back of the boards, because that is where soft wood absorbs moisture fastest. Rough-sawn wood absorbs more product than planed wood. Always test a colour with a sample first. For facade cladding, read more in treating shiplap cladding. One litre of Landhuisverf covers about 26 m² per coat.
Maintenance
Check ayous every year on the sides exposed to sun and rain. Touch up an opaque finish locally with a new coat of Landhuisverf. Remove green algae with Terrasreiniger; never use a pressure washer. For facades, also see facade cladding.
