Finishing a garden gate outdoors

Finish a wooden garden gate with Osmo Natuurlijke Olie-Beits, or with Osmo Landhuisverf if you want an opaque colour. A garden gate opens and closes every day, gets rain from all sides and is touched often. As a result, the finish around the hinges, the lock and the bottom edge wears first.

Natuurlijke Olie-Beits

Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a primer and top coat in one and suitable for all exterior wood. Apply two coats. Pigmented colours protect against UV, the clear 701 does not. This gives the gate a transparent or semi-opaque colour that keeps the wood grain visible. If you want the gate to match your fence, use the same colour.

Opaque with Landhuisverf

Landhuisverf is an opaque oil-based paint that keeps the wood structure visible. There are 21 colours, which you can also mix. The paint does not flake and you can touch it up without sanding, which is handy in places that are touched a lot. You can also finish vertical parts with UV-Beschermingsolie.

Preparation

Preferably take the gate off its hinges, so you can treat the bottom edge and the end grain properly. Let new wood weather for at least six weeks and always test a colour with a sample first. One litre of Natuurlijke Olie-Beits or Landhuisverf covers about 26 m² per coat. Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can self-ignite.

Maintenance

Check the gate every year around the hinges and the bottom edge, and touch up bare spots straight away. Clean with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. Also see post for the posts the gate hangs on.
