As a result, the outside weathers faster than the inside. Even so, always treat both sides and all edges, so the wood moves evenly.
Opaque with Landhuisverf
Shutters often have a colour that matches the window frames and the facade. Landhuisverf is an opaque oil-based paint that leaves the wood structure visible. There are 21 colours, which you can also mix. The paint does not flake or crack, and you can touch it up without sanding, over the old coat. Also take a look at window frames.
Transparent with UV-Beschermingsolie
If you want the wood grain to show, choose UV-Beschermingsolie. It gives vertical wood 12 times more protection against UV light than untreated wood. Apply two coats: one coat with colour followed by a coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. A pigmented colour protects better against greying than clear.
Preparation
Preferably take the shutters off their hinges and lay them on trestles, so you can reach everything properly, including the bottom edge. Make sure the wood is clean and dry, and always test a colour with a sample first. One litre of Landhuisverf covers about 26 m² per coat, and one litre of UV-Beschermingsolie about 18 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can catch fire spontaneously.
Maintenance
Clean shutters with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. Touch up the sunny side and the bottom edge first. For similar exterior wood, also take a look at shed and facade cladding.
