Oil and stain for chestnut outdoors
Finish chestnut outdoors with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie or Natuurlijke Olie-Beits. Chestnut is widely used outdoors for posts, fences and facades. Like oak, it contains tannins, which can cause discolouration when wet. A protective finish limits that discolouration and retains the warm colour for longer.
UV-Beschermingsolie for vertical wood
For a chestnut facade or fence, choose UV-Beschermingsolie. Apply two coats: first one coat with colour, followed by one coat of 420 clear. Because chestnut resembles oak in colour, 425 Eiken works well as the colour coat. A pigmented colour protects better against greying than clear. The oil is not suitable for horizontal wood such as a terrace. Also see fence.
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a primer and top coat in one and suitable for all outdoor wood, including posts and pergolas. Apply two coats, for example in 706 Eiken. The clear 701 does not protect against UV. For a chestnut garden bench or table, choose Terras-Olie.
Posts and ground contact
On posts, the part around ground level is the most vulnerable. Treat the end grain well and make sure rainwater can drain away. Use stainless steel fittings, so the tannins do not react with iron. Let new wood weather for at least six weeks. Also see post. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat, and one litre of Natuurlijke Olie-Beits about 26 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, as oily cloths can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Clean treated wood with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. First remove the grey from weathered wood with Power-Gel. When renovating, apply no more than one coat. For a comparable wood species, see oak outdoors.
