Oil and stain for a wooden post
Finish a wooden post with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie or Osmo Natuurlijke Olie-Beits. Posts in a fence, pergola or carport are often exposed to wind and weather for years. The most vulnerable part is the base, where the post touches the ground or a post support, followed by the top, where rainwater can soak into the end grain.
UV-Beschermingsolie
UV-Beschermingsolie is made for vertical wood and is therefore well suited to posts. The oil protects against UV light with a factor of 12 compared with untreated wood. Apply two coats: one coat with colour followed by one coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. This keeps the wood grain visible and slows down the greying of the post.
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a primer and top coat in one and suitable for all outdoor wood. Apply two coats. Pigmented colours protect against UV, the clear 701 does not. Useful if you want the posts in the same colour as the rest of your fence or pergola.
Base and end grain
A finish does not make a post suitable for long-term ground contact. So for posts in the ground, choose wood that is suitable for this, or place the post on a post support so the wood can dry. Give the end grain at the top extra attention, or cover it with a post cap. Read more in first aid for wood rot. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat. Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, as oily cloths can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Check posts every year at the base and the top. Clean with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. First remove the grey from weathered wood with Power-Gel.
