Oil and paint for wooden facade cladding
Finish wooden facade cladding with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie, Natuurlijke Olie-Beits or Landhuisverf. A facade is vertical, so rainwater runs off quickly, but it does get the full sun. The side exposed to sun and rain in particular weathers quickly and turns grey first. The right finish depends on the look you want.
Transparent with UV-Beschermingsolie
UV-Beschermingsolie is made for vertical wood and protects against UV light with a factor of 12 compared with untreated wood. Apply two coats: one coat with colour followed by one coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. The light colours, such as 427 Douglas or 428 Red cedar, are designed to keep the wood species of the same name light. Also see Red Cedar and thermowood.
Stain or opaque paint
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a primer and top coat in one; apply two coats. For an opaque colour that keeps the wood structure visible, choose Landhuisverf. It does not peel and you can touch it up without sanding. For an even grey look, there is Vergrijzingsbeits.
Preparation
Let new wood weather for at least six weeks. Also treat the back and the cut edges of the boards before fitting them. Read more in treating Swedish weatherboarding. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat, and Landhuisverf about 26 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, as oily cloths can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Check the facade every year, starting with the side exposed to sun and rain. Clean with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. First remove the grey from weathered wood with Power-Gel. When renovating, apply no more than one thin coat.
