Oil for thermowood outdoors
Finish thermowood outdoors with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie on facades and fences, and with Osmo Terras-Olie on a terrace. The heat treatment makes thermowood dark brown and more stable than untreated wood. It absorbs less moisture, but outdoors it does turn grey under the influence of sun and rain.
Terras-Olie 010 Thermohout
For a thermowood terrace, choose Terras-Olie, for example in 010 Thermohout, a colour that resembles the brown shade of thermowood. The pigmented versions protect against UV light and keep the brown colour for longer. For grip, apply Antislip Terras-Olie 430 as a third coat over two coats of Terras-Olie; never directly on bare wood. Also see terrace.
UV-Beschermingsolie for the facade
Treat vertical thermowood with UV-Beschermingsolie, in two coats: first a coloured coat and then a coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. The oil is made for vertical wood and is not suitable for terraces. Also see facade cladding.
Thin coats
Thermowood is less porous than untreated wood. So apply thin coats and wipe away excess oil after a few minutes, so that no sticky patches form. Always test with a sample first. Read more in treating thermally modified wood. One litre of Terras-Olie covers about 24 m² per coat, and one litre of UV-Beschermingsolie about 18 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, as cloths soaked in oil can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Clean treated wood with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. First remove the greying from greyed wood with Power-Gel. When renovating, apply no more than one thin coat. For comparable facade wood, also see accoya outdoors. If you deliberately want a silver-grey look, Vergrijzingsbeits gives an even grey colour straight away.
