Oil and stain for oak outdoors
Finish oak outdoors with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie or Natuurlijke Olie-Beits on facades, gates and fences, and with Osmo Terras-Olie on garden furniture and terraces. Oak contains tannins. In contact with iron and moisture it can turn black, and a well-sealed finish limits this.
Vertical oak
For an oak facade or gate, choose UV-Beschermingsolie. The colours 425 Eiken and 432 Eiken licht are designed to keep oak light in colour; first apply a coloured coat, followed by a coat of 420 clear. Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is also suitable, for example in 706 Eiken or 732 Eiken licht, in two coats. A pigmented colour protects better against greying than a clear one. Also see facade cladding.
Garden furniture and terrace
UV-Beschermingsolie is not suitable for horizontal surfaces. So treat an oak garden table, bench or terrace with Terras-Olie, for example in 021 Moeraseik. Also see garden furniture.
Preventing black stains
Use stainless steel screws and fittings, so that no iron comes into contact with the wet wood. Also treat the end grain and sawn edges. First remove the grey from weathered oak with Power-Gel, and let new wood weather for at least six weeks. Read more in treating oak. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat, and one litre of Natuurlijke Olie-Beits about 26 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Clean treated oak with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. When renovating, apply no more than one coat. For oak indoors, see oak indoors, and for a comparable wood species, see chestnut outdoors. On previously treated wood, always test on an inconspicuous spot first.
