Oil for ipe outdoors
Finish ipe outdoors with Osmo Terras-Olie, and on a terrace that can become slippery with Osmo Antislip Terras-Olie 430 as a top coat. Ipe is one of the hardest and densest decking species. It hardly absorbs any moisture, but for the same reason it holds little oil. Touching it up thinly from time to time works better than one thick coat.
Pigmented Terras-Olie
Terras-Olie protects against water and dirt. The pigmented versions also protect against UV light and keep the dark colour for longer; tints such as 014 Massaranduba or 016 Bankirai donker suit ipe. The clear 007 Teakolie offers no protection against UV. Always test a colour with a sample first.
Apply thinly
Apply the oil thinly and wipe off whatever has not soaked in after a few minutes. Too much oil stays on the surface and becomes tacky. For grip, apply Antislip Terras-Olie 430 as a third coat over two coats of Terras-Olie; never directly on bare wood. For stairs, also take a look at outdoor stairs.
Preparation
Let new ipe weather for at least six weeks and then remove the grey. If the wood has already turned grey, first treat it with Power-Gel. Read more about dense hardwood in hardwood oil. One litre of Terras-Olie covers about 24 m² per coat. Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can catch fire spontaneously.
Maintenance
Clean the terrace periodically with Terrasreiniger in the mop water and brush along the grain. Never use a pressure washer, because it damages the wood. When renovating, apply no more than one thin coat. Also take a look at terrace and cumaru outdoors.
