Oil and paint for a wooden exterior door
Finish a wooden exterior door with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie or, for an opaque colour, with Osmo Landhuisverf. An exterior door is exposed to sun and rain, but also to daily knocks around the lock and the handle. An oil-based finish soaks into the wood and does not flake, so you can touch up damage locally without sanding the whole door.
Transparent with UV-Beschermingsolie
UV-Beschermingsolie is made for vertical wood and protects against UV light by a factor of 12 compared with untreated wood. Apply two coats: a coloured coat followed by a coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. This keeps the wood grain visible and the door greys more slowly. We advise against two coloured coats.
Opaque with Landhuisverf
If you want a coloured door, choose Landhuisverf. It is an opaque oil-based paint that keeps the wood structure visible. There are 21 colours, which you can also mix, so the door matches your window frame. The paint does not flake or crack. Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a third option, for a transparent or semi-opaque colour.
Preparation
Remove fittings such as the handle and the lock, or mask them off well. Also treat the bottom and top edges of the door, because that is where moisture soaks in fastest. Always test a colour with a sample first. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat, and one litre of Landhuisverf about 26 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Touch up spots around the lock and the handle as soon as they become bare. Read more in local touch-ups with Osmo. Clean the door with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. For doors indoors, see interior door.
