Paint, oil and stain for pine outdoors
Finish pine outdoors with Osmo Landhuisverf, Natuurlijke Olie-Beits or UV-Beschermingsolie. Pine used outdoors is usually preservative-treated, but it remains sensitive to moisture at sawn edges and damaged areas. A good finish protects the wood and gives it the colour you want.
Opaque with Landhuisverf
Landhuisverf is an opaque oil-based paint for exterior wood such as fences, sheds, window frames and carports. The wood structure stays visible and the paint does not flake. You can touch it up without sanding, straight over the old coat. Also see fence and shed.
Transparent with oil or stain
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a primer and top coat in one and suitable for all exterior wood, for example in 700 Grenen; apply two coats. For vertical wood you can also use UV-Beschermingsolie: a coloured coat followed by a coat of 420 clear. Pigmented colours protect against UV, clear versions do not, or do so less.
Sawn edges and preparation
Treat sawn edges and end grain extra well, because that is where moisture soaks in fastest. Let new wood weather for at least six weeks, then clean it. Rough-sawn wood absorbs more product than planed wood. The step-by-step guide is in treating pine for outdoor use. One litre of Landhuisverf or Natuurlijke Olie-Beits covers about 26 m² per coat. Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Clean a fence with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. First remove the grey from weathered wood with Power-Gel. For pine indoors, see pine indoors, and for a comparable wood species, see spruce outdoors. On previously treated wood, always test on an inconspicuous spot first.
