Oil and stain for Douglas Fir outdoors
Finish Douglas Fir outdoors with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie, Natuurlijke Olie-Beits or Landhuisverf on facades and fences, and with Osmo Terras-Olie on a terrace. Douglas Fir is a softwood with a warm, orange-brown heartwood. The growth rings differ in hardness, so an oil can penetrate unevenly if you do not sand the wood lightly.
Facade and fence
For transparent protection on vertical Douglas Fir, choose UV-Beschermingsolie: first one coat of 427 Douglas, a light colour that keeps Douglas Fir light, followed by one coat of 420 clear. Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is both primer and top coat and suitable for all outdoor wood; apply two coats. For an opaque colour, there is Landhuisverf. Also see facade cladding and fence.
Douglas Fir terrace
UV-Beschermingsolie is not intended for horizontal wood. Treat a Douglas Fir terrace with Terras-Olie 004 Douglas, optionally with Antislip Terras-Olie 430 as a third coat for extra grip. Also see terrace.
Preparation
Sand Douglas Fir lightly so the oil penetrates evenly. Let new wood weather for at least six weeks. First remove the grey from weathered wood with Power-Gel; never use a pressure washer. Read more in treating Douglas Fir. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat, and one litre of Natuurlijke Olie-Beits about 26 m². Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, as oily cloths can self-ignite.
Maintenance
The side exposed to sun and rain weathers fastest and needs attention first. When renovating, apply no more than one new coat. If you deliberately want a grey look, choose Vergrijzingsbeits, which gives an even silver-grey colour straight away. Always test first in an inconspicuous spot on previously treated wood.
