Oil for Red Cedar outdoors
Finish Red Cedar outdoors with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie, for example in the colour 428 Red cedar or 431 Red Cedar licht. Red Cedar is a light, soft wood species with a warm reddish brown colour that is widely used for facade cladding. Without protection it turns grey under the influence of sun and rain.
UV-Beschermingsolie in two coats
UV-Beschermingsolie gives vertical wood 12 times more protection against UV light than untreated wood. First apply a coat of 428 Red cedar or 431 Red Cedar licht and then a coat of 420 clear. These light colours were developed to keep Red Cedar light in colour. We do not recommend two coloured coats. The oil is not suitable for horizontal surfaces. Also take a look at facade cladding.
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits
An alternative is Natuurlijke Olie-Beits in 728 Red cedar. It is a primer and top coat in one and suitable for all exterior wood. Apply two coats. Pigmented colours protect against UV, the clear 701 does not.
Soft wood, thin coats
Red Cedar is soft and absorbs oil quickly, especially when it is rough sawn. Apply thin coats and also treat the sawn edges and the back of the boards. Let new wood weather for at least six weeks. Read more in treating Swedish shiplap cladding and UV protection for wood. One litre of UV-Beschermingsolie covers about 18 m² per coat. Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can catch fire spontaneously.
Maintenance
The sunny and rainy sides of a facade weather fastest and need attention first. Clean with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. Remove the grey from weathered wood first with Power-Gel. For similar facade wood, also take a look at Thermowood outdoors.
