Oil and stain for a wooden pergola
Finish a wooden pergola with Osmo UV-Beschermingsolie on the posts and Osmo Natuurlijke Olie-Beits on the beams, or entirely with Natuurlijke Olie-Beits. A pergola stands free in the garden and gets sun and rain from all sides. The top of the beams catches the most sun and rain and therefore weathers fastest.
UV-Beschermingsolie for posts
UV-Beschermingsolie protects vertical wood against UV light by a factor of 12 compared with untreated wood. Apply two coats: a coloured coat followed by a coat of 420 clear, or two coats of 420. The oil is not suitable for horizontal surfaces, where water lies longer.
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits for beams
Natuurlijke Olie-Beits is a primer and top coat in one and suitable for all exterior wood, including the horizontal beams. Apply two coats. Pigmented colours protect against UV, the clear 701 does not. For a grey look there is, for example, 906 Parelgrijs. Also see canopy and post.
Preparation
Preferably treat the beams before assembly, so that the joints and end grain are protected too. Let new wood weather for at least six weeks and always test a colour with a sample first. One litre of Natuurlijke Olie-Beits covers about 26 m² per coat. Rinse used cloths with water afterwards, because cloths with oil on them can self-ignite.
Maintenance
Check the top of the beams every spring. Clean with Terrasreiniger and never use a pressure washer. First remove the grey from weathered wood with Power-Gel. When renovating, apply no more than one thin coat. Read more in transparent stain for outdoor use.
